Ya baseball is much more of a sport, where more than half of the players on the field have nothing to do at any given moment. Or golf is such a sport.
One day there will be robot refs and judges! and the scoring will be fair, unless someone messes with the programming code. Cannot wait until robots ref the NBA games! I would love to see those NBA players whine to the robots.
no hype machine for me, i love it. i'm not going to try and convince you or change your mind like others. don't be a hater, stay out of the thread.
but it's not based on whims and bias. it's based on routine and execution. granted it "might" be slightly be influenced bias or a whim. but if you fail at your routine no amount of bias or whim will get you a score. i mean you still have to do the damn routine right? 2 good routines all thing being equal, usa and china. sure china gets the win. sucks but again both still had to perform the routine equally well or equally bad. and don't ever say that basketball, baseball, football, etc... is objective. ever heard of donaghy, a strikezone, instant replay, etc... golf might be the most objective since there is none, it's the golfer against the course.
i hear ya...but it certainly feels more objective. the object is to score more points...and that can be certainly and easily measured. when points are awarded at the discretion of a judge, there is a difference. i'm not making the argument they aren't sports are whatever else...i'm just pointing out the differences. but if you've watched any of the boxing so far...and the way points are scored...you realize what an absolute farce that system can be. it's to the point of being laughable, really. i never said it was BASED on whims and bias...i said it was subject to it...and more highly subject to it than sports like baseball, soccer or basketball.
Every sport has its issues. The thing that's great about the Olympics is that everyone is involved. Those girls compete, by dancing on that mat, every year all year long... but only once every four years do any of them get a chance to do it on the international stage that is the Olympics. Those swimmers and divers have been performing in meets all over the world to try and outdo one another. But on the Olympic stage they take it to a new level. Umpires can call a ball a strike and vice versa. Refs can cause a player problems by calling touch fouls on him. Every sport has it's possible issues. Some just more visibly obvious than others.
exactly. it's only 2-3 weeks..just shut up and watch everything you can. enjoy new sports. try to enjoy things you don't usually watch. i mean football season is coming, baseball playoffs are coming, basketball is coming. so everyone just calm down. so far i have watched so many diff sports i dont usually watch. am i going to get all addicted to these sports and become a fan? no. but that's not going to stop me from enjoying world class athletes good at watever it is. Beach volleyball Cycling Diving Field Hockey Gymnastics Soccer Swimming Weightlifting
My list so far: All of the above, plus Water polo Badminton Team handball Team archery Volleyball Boxing Tennis I know I am forgetting some. I am a certified Olympics junkie.
I can't believe how fast these guys are swimming the backstroke -- almost looks like freestyle from the side.
Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe is a pretty neat story. I find myself rooting for her a lot, especially when Natalie Coughlin runs into the lane lines.
I watch track and swimming races when they are on TV and not just Olympics. It's not something that's must see for me but I watch it casually. If all of these people watch gymnastics in their spare time good for them. However I'm betting most do not in here.
