This was the one event that the USA was actually not predicted to win. France's relay team is made up of a great swimmers who are incredibly tall and lean. The commentators remarked on how Cullen Jones of the US was our weak link and he did a great job holding his own in the third leg. The finish had me pounding my table and yelling. And... ah! The Star Spangled Banner is played yet again!

    Wow.

As you watched the race, they had that WR line and a whole bunch of swimmers were ahead of it.

Sweden, who did not medal, came in fifth place, beat the old WR.

    Pretty amazing stuff.

Spain's Basketball Federation has published a good luck advert for their men's team, the world champions, in which they stand pulling at the sides of their eyes in a slit-eyed gesture.

There is no obvious intention to upset their Olympic hosts in Beijing, but the irresponsible picture is likely to cause controversy and could be interpreted so as to lead to accusations of racism.

Spanish sport has been mired in rows over racism in the last few years. In November 2004 black English footballers were subjected to relentless racial barracking from home supporters in a match in Spain. Before the World Cup there were calls for Luis Aragones, then Spain's football coach, to be sacked after he called Thierry Henry a "black ****". And last year Lewis Hamilton suffered racist abuse during testing for the Spanish grand prix near Barcelona.

Spain play their first match in the Olympic basketball competition against Greece at 7.30am BST today.

I am still pumped after watching that race. I think I woke up everyone in a 2 mile radius with the primal scream that escaped when I saw the US flag as #1.

    Amazing.

That was a great race. The records are falling and right. Is because of the new swim suits?

    Wow, what a race.

Ok, so today I watched bandmitton, gymnastics (those chicks are not 16) and swimming....3 sports that I would never consider watching. I was screaming for some dudes swimming...still can't get over that.

So who has been watching stuff they normally don't get into?

What the Olympics have taught me is that we need a professional handball league in America ASAP.

guess the Nbc hype marketing campaign is working for some of you guys.

I personally do not enjoy seeing a bunch of 13 yr old girls dance on a mat. Or badminton. Or watching people shooting an arrow. Or seeing guys lift some weights. Or beach volleyball. Or any volleyball for that matter.

Swimming and track is watchable because it's a race. It's high paced.

That was the best race I can ever remember watching. Just when you thought we were out of it, he went into another gear and pulled it off. The French talking smack? Surely you can't be serious.

I agree. Most of this stuff isn't even really sports. Diving and gymnastics? Wait for judges to tell you who won. Whatever.

The thing about the Olympics is that it's the highest caliber of competition for that particular sport(with a few exceptions of course). Plus there's an issue of national pride, plus the competition is fairly short.

Overall, pretty good bang for the buck even if the sport itself might not be the most amusing.

More of a sport than say, poker, which ESPN airs an insanely high amount. Or even NASCAR, for that matter. Yeah, it's dependent on judges, but look at the people doing the uneven bars or the pommel horse and say that's not a sport.
