Not dissatisfied with the pick. Might have been a slight reach, but it just depends on who you talk to in terms of mock drafts. Plus, they did get some additional picks out of the deal. And if you are drafting on need vs. best available, sometimes you have to jump in on a run even as the best players at that position are gone. Would've been nice to trade down again, but there may have been no suitors or worthwhile deals.
next picks.. Round 3, Pick 16 (79) Round 3, Pick 26 (89) (From Jaguars through Ravens) I'm guessing CB and WR, possibility of S as well
The Texans weren't going to take a RB in the 1st and other than Mendenhall, I didn't see anybody I really wanted at #18. I wanted to trade down to pick up a 2nd but a 3rd/6th is decent. Brown might seem like a reach depending on who you're listening to but he was a convert from a TE/DE so we know he's athletic. We'll see how this pans out.
Yeah Kiper is a turd, but we got the most athletic OL in the draft apparently... That's a hallmark of the ZBS
NYG or SF might take a WR but if not then there will be none taken in the 1st round, right? I don't think GB will take one.
http://corner.bigblueinteractive.com/index.php?mode=2&thread=286671 Scouts quotes on Brown: 2. DUANE BROWN, Virginia Tech (6-4, 309, 5.06, 2) - Backup TE in '04, starting RT in 2005 and '06 and starting LT in '07. "I'd move him to guard," Hardaway said. "He has raw tools and talents." Scored 29 on the Wonderlic and led guards in vertical jump at 32½ inches. "His glass is half full," Modrak said. "There's a lot to work with. He came on as the year went on. He's a non-finished guy who has as much talent as any of them." Might be too short for tackle. "He's going to go high," Angelo said. "He's tough. Had a nice combine. Passes the eye test. Nothing not to like."
Here's another site's take on Brown http://www.fftoolbox.com/nfl_draft/profile_display.cfm?Prospect_ID=1522 Few players increased their value more than Duane Brown at the Combine. In a couple of days Brown pretty much went from a mid-round selection to a possible second round pick. He is still a little raw since he moved to offensive tackle from tight end just three years ago, but he quickly proved at Virginia Tech that he is a formidable lineman. During his senior season he started to improve his form and that swiftly turned into much better production. The buzz started during Senior Week when Brown had a good showing at the East-West Shrine game. The buzz grew fast at the Combine when Brown ranked among the leaders in the 40-yard dash, vertical jump, 3-cone drill and 20-yard shuffle for offensive tackles. Brown will still need some work on his technique and to get a little stronger at the point of attack, but once that is taken care of many expect that he can be a great lineman for years to come. He will be just as quick as most ends and you cannot teach that speed or athleticism.
I have to say that I was pretty dissappointed at Mike Mayock's reaction about the Texans drafting Brown....he had Brown rated in the mid-second to early third and acted quite astonished that the Texans drafted him where they did. It's almost like these guys (both he AND Kiper) trash the picks if they aren't what THEY thought they'd be. Overall, I think it's another shrewd move by Rick Smith and Co. Besides, Alex Gibbs might know a wee bit more about the O-Line than Mayock or Kiper.
Good pick by the Champs....I've always liked Kenny Phillips. Seems like a tremendous playmaker and good all around addition to a secondary.
