WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! As I have said countless times, there are no such things as curses. If you believe in that, you might as well as believe in Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster, and UFOs. Giddily says to himself No more 1918 chants No more babe ruth pictures No more smug Yankee fans to taunt us No more other bull**** WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
Congrats Red Sox, you won your championship the same way the hated Yanks did. You bought it. 2nd highest payroll in the leage means you're no ordinary small ballclub. Hope you're happy.
Boston won?!?!! This isn't the end of The Curse of the Bambino... ...it's the beginning of The Curse of NOMAHH!!! THE CUBS WILL NEVER AGAIN WIN A WORLD SERIES; CURSE x2!!! God, how many Red Sox players/coaches use chew?
Uh, Boston is in a major media market. Your last sentence makes no sense. Are you a bitter Yankees fan? All they had to do was win 1 game out of 4. Hope you're happy. Yup.
my last post in this thread. Congrats Red Sox. Glad you beat the Cardinals. This was a bitter sweet win. Glad the Cards lost.....glad it ended so soon.......and disapointed it wasn't our stros puting up a fight.
Manny - I hate the Yanks but I'm glad humble Sox fans like you think all non-Sox fans must be yank-lovers. With all due respect, I have no respect for a city that has such an inferiority complex when they have an NFL team that has won 2 of the last 3 Super Bowls and an NBA team that has the most championships in NBA history. Boston really shouldn't complain about ANYTHING for the next 30-odd years.
Congrats Boston... but now, you're just "another baseball team." See 1980 Philadelphia Phillies... nobody really looked at them the same after they finally won.
What a year of destiny for the Sox. To come from near elimination to just steamrolling two of the best teams was just incredible. The WS was set to be a an awesome matchup. However, only one team showed up. I don't know how the Cards won 105 games, but they were thoroughly outclassed. The Red Sox were truly the best team this year and all family business was settled.
Thank you. I'm glad for the Red Sox and their fans after not having won in so long (I was rooting for them once the Stros lost), but can we quit hearing their sob story now? Congrats Red Sox. Now you're just another team with a bigger payroll than most.
Does anyone know the exact payroll of the redsox and other big name teams? i found a website but it seems kind of strange to me... i always expected boston to be second after the yankees. http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2003/0721/1583823.html Does this seem right to anyone?
Well I think those were last year's numbers. I think the whole bidding war with NY put the Sox up at #2
That's 2003 data. Check out http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/teams/salaries?team=bos for current payroll. NY #1 (183 mil), Bos #2 (125 mil), everyone else well back. I'm happy for the Sox and their fans, but their organization take the "evil empire" stuff too far when they buy their players too. Expos couldn't afford Pedro, in comes Boston. BoSox outbid Cleveland for Manny. Kurt Schilling leaves cash-strapped Arizona for cash-rich Boston. Imagine how good the Stros (75 mil payroll) would have been with an additional 50 million in payroll. That's enough to buy Pedro, Schilling, Varitek, Ortiz, and Foulke with money left over. This free agency stuff comes in handy when it's your team that benefits, but baseball badly needs a salary cap.
Hey, it is true that Boston had a huge payroll, but it has been discussed all season that they (they being Red Sox mgmt) will let Pedro, Derek Lowe, and Cabrera go via free agency. Varitek may also leave as he is a FA. You may wonder why, but it is simple - John Henry (Red Sox majority owner) does not want to go over the luxury tax (like Steinbrenner) and he still wants to make a nice profit. Why else do you think they couldn't get A-Rod (which turned out to be a blessing)? So, it isn't all nice and rosy that the Red Sox just "buy" players like some of you guys are making it. Unlike the Yankees, they try to use some "fiscal sanity". And halfbreed - bully for you for feeling like you do, that's cool. But spare me the condescending remark of me being humble, okay? You aren't coming across in the most flattering way with your sour grapes attitude.
Fiscal sanity is defined by your market and your revenue stream, I suppose. $125 million is fiscal sanity for the Sox, $180m is fiscal sanity for the yankees, $81m is fiscal sanity for St. Louis. I have no problem with the Red Sox buying players, the system allows for it and they stay competitive as a result. But don't tell me that their payroll level hasn't allowed them to stay competitive by pursuing free agents aggressively. Of the everyday contributors to the WS win, who came up through the Boston farm system besides Varitek, Nixon, and Lowe? The gap between the Red Sox payroll and the #3 team (Angels) is greater than the distance between the #3 and #11 teams. Take nothing away from the players on the field - the best team won without question. Schilling is a horse and was just what your team needed, Lowe came up huge in the playoffs, and trading away Nomar was a gutsy move that paid off. But I'm just tired of hearing the organization characterize the Yankees as a free-spending team that's bad for baseball when the fact is that both teams are in the same mold as far as spending goes. You can't have it both ways.
