I do believe there are protections being called, but they're not being executed, we're leaving free rushers even when we have more blockers than the defense sends pass rushers due to assignment busts.
I would hate to think it's the latter but who knows, Ryans said everything is on the table and I don't expect huge changes, but I hope one change is sitting K Green, he just does not have it, maybe a change of scenery for the young man but he has no business starting
Maybe having a rookie in Juice calling out the assignments is part of the problem? Scruggs came from a ZBS system in Penn St so its not a foreign concept for him. The exotic fronts are probably confusing the hell out of him. edit: Holy hell I forgot Juice was a 2nd year player sheesh
Sucks as a fan but I have seen the same OL problems as last year. Nothing has actually changed and if anything its gotten worse. KC/Balt will be impossible to beat in the postseason if they don't fix it. It is just hard to get excited when its that bad.
They will see them as long as Bobby plays in such condensed formations. Its making things extremely tough on an offensive mind that appears to be mentally challenged. Its the worst coached group on our team by far.
Ross Tucker was on 610 and said that having a newbie QB and C, CJ and Juice are both in their second year, is a recipe for some growing pains. Usually you want a vet C with a young QB or a Vet QB with a newbie C. Also said that this may be a position coach issue. Didn’t want to speak out of turn but said it in a round about way. Mentioned that what made guys like Dante Scarnecchia and Mike Munchak great oline coaches was that they had a big say in what type of players were signed and drafted on the Oline.
I somewhat agree, but the bunch formations are by design assembled outside of the tackle. Only thing manipulating the front that would be alignment driven that could be an issue for Juice is pre snap motion in our backfield. I just dont think he knows what to do when 8 guys crowd the line and then 4 drop. Somehow the offensive ends are looking to block air towards the center instead of creating a true pocket looking to contain outside rush. If Slowik would assign one of the bunch receivers to haul ass on a rush route 2 yards behind the backers it would create chaos for the defense, but we are not seeing that yet. edit: another thing that could be an issue is that maybe the T's are waiting for a RB chip and thats why they are releasing the defensive end? edit 2: We may need to start moving the pocket soon
Condensed formations worked a bit last year, but the opposing DC has figured that sht out. Make adjustments and changes Slowik..
I mean, its just finding the mike and sliding protection towards the bunched side. Personally, I feel the condensed formations are causing issues with recognizing in that split second who the blocker is. Something is terribly wrong though. Most TFL's in a game since the early 2000's. 3rd most all time. The line was getting destroyed on the ground and in passing situations. They have to make a trade. They have the defense to win it now. Just need the OL, which imo is the last weak spot on the team. I think its just fixing the LG situation which is creating about half the pressures. Then maybe being less condensed in obvious passing situations can help TE's actually locate the blitzer. It really won't take much. The defense is so well coached. That was proven. They were extremely unlucky not to have a 4 to 5 pick game.
Alot of people were scoffing at a possible "sophomore slump" situation, but once DCs get a hold of your tendencies and you are not modifying on a week to week basis you are cooked. If those bunch plays happen to signal a preferred concept then Slowik is "tipping" his plays. When there are multiple blocking busts on damn near every play something REALLY bad went wrong and Slowik needs to own it and get it fixed. His presser on Thursday should be a hoot.
Ryans on VanderCarr's show: "I don't like wasted energy. I told them all that energy spent chirping could have been put to better use like finishing a block or making a catch." Wishing they also watched the broadcast version with the sound on to Romo. The condensed formations make it easier for the CB and then a LB to disrupt the receiver on a route within the 5 yards all while you're sending only 2 possible receivers on said route. So why keep doing it? It's a staple of the offense and it destroyed Cleveland's playoff hopes . What was different then? Dieter at Center. Fant at RT. Guys from other teams that had already seen things. Scruggs was at guard to finish the season.
Maybe he's on to something! If you WATCH film and you PRACTICE and you still don't get it, we may as well hold open tryouts. Hell, the Ravens lost two offensive linemen from last yrs squad and they are ROLLING. We have everybody back and we look lost!
Thats the thing though. I am watching the All 22. I would clip, but some have already done it so I will show you what I am talking about. This isn't a Stroud problem whatsoever. It is on Bobby Slowik, Chris Strausser, offensive lineman, TE's, Running backs. Tunsil- Mental Error. No slide protection. Man on man. He guesses and is wrong. It is basic ****. This could be on Tunsil, Green, or the back. Mental error. Based on how the Texans usually block this(back picks up inside), it appears that Tunsil's lack of awareness is the issue here. Look at Dalton Schultz get off on the route. Its just bad everywhere. Dalton Schultz.... Its hot pre snap. No slide. Block someone. The lack of awareness is astounding. Schultz late off the snap. Howard steps on his foot. QB has no chance. The back and Kenyon Green. Kenyon Green is not a good athlete. This is a systemic coaching issue and a really really bad LG. Tunsil also just lacks focus. Dalton Schultz is a problem. Dare had a few miscues.
But he didn't play much last year and not at all at center. He's learning on the job. Green didn't play much 2 years ago and not at all last year, so he's also learning on the job. With this said, I dont care about why, I care about results and the results so far haven't been good enough. Time for change.
Clip 1 is a fundamental breakdown in everything you have learned as an offensive tackle by Laremy. He is responsible for the end. I get it he's covered, but he should know thats Greens man. Clip 2 I think RB should have engaged the edge -- seems like a ridiculously more difficult assignment to ALLOW interior pressure on purpose and expect a RB to resist vs a DT. Hate everything about how that play is designed. Tunsil as an All Pro needs to be more situationally aware I think he could have done more on this play. Clip 3 Exotic front seems to be picked up well, but Dalton Shultz DOESNT EVEN LOOK at the end man. Clip 4 Tytus is moving like a guard these days Clip 5 RB was part of the progression this is where I'd like CJ to be able to call out max protect. Green is bad there is nothing much more to say about it. Slowik is trying to reinvent the wheel. Keep it simple especially with the blocking assignments. If guys are having to think too much and then the play is getting in there late its bad football.
