Regarding the Simmons article, interesting take on the different gates of Durant and Oden. I'm not saying Simmons actually knows what he's talking about, but I've knee surgery and people have said I walk differently now.
so the Blazers can play their kids another year and get another good draft pick to add with Oden next year......
I wouldn't exactly call them "cursed". They did win an NBA title, made it to the NBA Finals two other times, made the playoffs 21 consecutive years, and sold out god knows how many games in a row. If you want a cursed franchise, take a look at the LA Clippers...
I agree with much of what he says. Regardless of injury, I also thought Durant was the obvious choice between the two. Selecting a huge question mark like Oden with Durant available was a bad idea.
I thought you couldn't do anything basketball-related for at least six months. And I think Amare took longer than that to fully recover.
I always thought Durant was clearly the best player in the draft, and I was mildly surprised when I heard that the Blazers had locked in on Oden. It sucks, though. The optimist in me wants to say if Amare could make a comeback, so can Oden. Problem is, Oden does seem to be plagued with chronic injury issues (the incredibly slow-healing wrist, bulging disc, fatigue issues, tonsillitis, etc. etc.), and he is still very, very raw -- he hasn't nearly been the semi-dominant force that Amare was prior to his injury. This really does have Bowie 2.0 written all over it. I hope he eventually makes it back, but honestly the odds are not good.
Can someone please explain to me why microfracture surgeries are that hard to come back from successfully? I am from Australia, and players in our AFL have total knee reconstruction all the time ( at least a few cases a season), and I'd say the majority of them came back after roughly the same length of time required with microfracture (about a full year), and still play very well, without showing much difference. I'd thought a total reconstruction is much worse than microfracture, and that our game, australian football, relies just as much on the knees as basketball, if not more.
So much for can't miss prospects and picks that can't be screwed up. I hope he can come back strong and give the NBA something exciting in two years.
