And get this: A high-ranking Blazers source told me that Oden today still has the same body-fat percentage (7.8 percent) as he did when the Blazers drafted him, yet he has gained nearly 30 pounds, bringing him near 280 pounds. Translation: That's 30 pounds of muscle that has been attached to his upper-body (he hasn't been able to do any lower body weight training because of his knee surgery). [/quote] Writer doesn't make sense. Oden weighed in at 257 lbs at the draft. That's only 22 lbs of weight(near 280, 279 lbs). If Oden maintained the same amount of bodyfat and gained 22 lbs, those 22 lbs would have to be made up of 7.8% fat also. That takes it down to about 21 lbs.
Ease up, Forest. It was meant to be a joke because the claim in the article is so ridiculous I was comparing it to the nonsense that we get from the articles from the Chinese media.
30 lbs of pure muscle would him at almost 290 lbs, since he weighed in at 257 lbs at the draft. His bodyfat% would be lower, due to more of the mass made up of muscle.
it's only possible to gain that much muscle that quickly thru roids or something close to it like andro combined with other hormonal crap and combine that with eating a ton of calories. i know from experience. i didn't do roids but i was using 1-ad and some other over the counter stuff when it was still legal and i added about 20 lbs in 4 weeks. and even if it's 15 lbs of muscle on the upper body that is a good amount for 1 year of working out much less a couple months.
That's a good point about over the counter supplements. If Oden was using creatine, a supplment that causes extreme water retention, he could 10 lbs in water weight in a month for somebody that is already 257 lbs. Let's say the 21 lbs of muscle is accurate. Then, we take away 10 lbs of water. He has gained 11 lbs of pure muscle. That's equivalent to 2-3 lbs of muscle a week, which is definitely possible with professional trainers.
I thought in basketball it was not a good thing to have too much upper body weight. Except in the shoulders.
Oden has had numerous injuries since high school. It's tough to imagine that he would stay injury-free in a highly compeitive league like the NBA. However, as long as he doesn't suffer major injuries like his knee injury this year, he will be a factor in the league. The Blazers are going to be very good in the near future.
it takes years to put on 30lbs of muscle. if anyone has actually tried to gain muscle only they would know. 2nd, its almost impossible to go on a bulking diet (calories surplus needed to build muscle) and not gain fat along the way. 3rd he is going to end up with more problems than he has if he puts on too much weight up top, kinda like what tmac had last season. all in all, i call BS on this article. the real translation: oden has put on major weight after sitting at home after surgery.
IF as in years you mean .5 years then I agree. I tried it. I did it. Plus if you have never lifted then losing fat and gaining muscle comes easily at first. especcially the fat in the muscle.
I haven't seen much of Greg Oden but IMO the most physically intimidating player right now is Dwight Howard. Shaq is showing his age and Yao is too gentle.
lol. hate to break it to you bro, but that 30 lbs. you gained in half a year wasn't all muscle. it's physically impossible unless you were stacking some serious combination of illegal substances. i have no doubt you gained 30 lbs. but the very process of bulking through weight lifting involves operating in a calorie surplus. again, unless your using some serious stuff, there's alot of extra carbohydrates/fats you had to have consumed to gain that much weight that quickly. translation to the article: greg oden has gained 30 lbs. since his surgery on a bulking diet, with no cardio due to the injured wheel and no lower body workout. because he has only been working out his upper body, and also for the first time, it is reported that he has gained 30 lbs. of muscle only in his upper body!!. lol. that's actually just 30lbs of mass evenly spread out due to the lifting and lack of cardio to shed the extra calories. and half of it is pure muscle at most.
I don't know much about body buiding but I'm going to guess the rules are different for people this tall
i don't know why people think it's so easy to gain muscle. the other day i was at the gym and i was doing some tricep work. so next to me was this lady with a personal trainer. the lady was lil bit fat, so i am pretty sure she was trying to lose some weight. so then she is doing a bicep curl. and she says to the trainer: "this is pretty light.." trainer: " you can increase the weight" lady: "well i don't want to lift too heavy and put on muscle" seriously folks...your body hates muscle...it will do anything to avoid putting on muscle. and when you are on a cutting diet, it will try to get rid of it too. which is why when a lot of people "diet" they end up losing "weight" and look like crap. weight = bones, organs, etc + muscle + fat + water i am not disputing the fact than anyone can put on 30lbs of muscle. the time he did it in, the fact that his body fat didnt change at all, and all in the upper body.
OK "bro" go along with your subpar diet and training and then claim that certain goals are impossible (because you have not personally achieved them) if it makes you feel better about your effort.
lol....its not possible to gain that much muscle that fast. it's not about "achievement" or not working hard enough. you have to be roided out of your mind to gain 30 lbs of muscle in this time frame. and if it was so easy to add muscle on taller guys then why did it take yao so long to get to the level he is at now? it's not as if yao was a slouch with his work out schedule. you act as if tall people have different muscle building genetics because they are tall.
