This is a good thread, but i think doozo's is so overrated. just not into steamed dumplings that much I guess
I was having hardcore Asian food withdrawals after I moved to the country (couple of typical americanized takeout-type places, that was it unless I drove to Austin). Found a gas station owned by a 1st gen immigrant Thai family, they had a kitchen in the back & served lunch, total hole-in-the-wall looking place. So I ask the wife if she has a good Tom Kha Gai recipe & she smiled & said come back in a couple of days. Holy crap, not sure if it's better than Kanomwan but it's in the same ballpark no doubt. I'd stop in every couple of weeks & ask her to make me a pot...a few months later it's on their daily menu. You Houstonians don't know how good you have it, restaurant-wise. Biggest thing I miss about that town.
they have this at this thai restaurant downtown in the tunnel under shell 2 building. It was pretty good, a milky chicken flavor, I believe it was the same thing. the restaurant is cafeteria style so i wasn't really paying attention to names.
If you're ever in the Highland Lakes area, shoot me an email, I honestly don't know the name of the place off the top of my head..."something something food mart".
The falafel sandwich at Zabak's is one of the best recommends I've ever gotten. I've taken a few people there and they have agreed.
I like steamed dumplings but I agree that it's a little overrated. Dumpling King and Santong Snacks on Bellaire have really good dumplings.
It's been a couple of years but it used to be really good. Was one of my wifes favorites for a while. Need to go back sometime. (I'm talking about the one on s first I think there may be more now)
The "Blue Fish Eye" sushi roll at Blue Fish House on Richmond at Greenbriar. I could eat a hundred of 'em in a sitting, washed down by cold Kirin Light and warm sake. Extra wasabi please! PER THE MENU: Blue fish eye (5 pcs.) - tempura smoked salmon, tuna, cream cheese, jalapeno, flying fish roe, wrapped w/ soybean paper. By the way, Blue Fish House is great sushi for you Montrose area or Greenway area folks.
I think that's technically called carne asada fries....never had it, but i've always wanted to. I think they're more popular in Cali though. Sometimes they come with guacamole and sour cream
Actually, it is shoestrig french fries topped with queso, roast beef and roast beef gravy and it is awesome. This is one of the things that came from Katrina victims. I've seen a couple of other cajun retaurants make this as well recently, but the BB's one is the best. Here was a review from our previous critic at the Press when he was reviewing his favorite 100 things to eat in Houston. I'll be trying his Oysters Gilhooley this month considering it ended up at #1. http://blogs.houstonpress.com/eating/2010/06/robb_walshs_100_favorite_houst_80.php
