Why are you guys arguing about different genres ? They appeal to different crowds. Most Rpg players play mainly for story and a sense of adventure while FPS prefer fast pace action and pwning noobies online? Meh I don't really care about which game takes more skills since it's fun factor that matters. Anyone can play an easy game skillfully anyways i.e Tetris and most Rpg players I know of don't use strat guides because it ruins the fun.
Reusing the same gameplay content of previous games without really introducing anything new. I was more or less inferring that from the Rokkit/dback816 posts though, so I was trying to use their definitions of it. To some degree, yes. Some concepts are recycled. Nothing to complain about though. There's is definitely a LOT of new stuff in racing games today compared to Turbo. Damage, online play, weather effects, motorcycles, etc. Burnout Paradise even throws in some "sandbox" gameplay. An example of recycling content here would be if GT5 was basically just GT4, but with better graphics and maybe better racing physics. No damage, weather effects, online mode, etc. Actually seems like that almost happened, but I think Polyphony is putting in some/most of those features, so not too bad. Still, comparing GT4/GT5 and FF12/FF13, there is definitely a lot more recycling going on in GT I think. And both games took like 4-5 years to develop (primarily why I decided to compare GT and FF as opposed to FF and some game that took 1-2 years to develop). Not really trying to say that GT5 is bad or anything though, especially if you're already really happy with the gameplay model in place. Just using it for comparisons sake. Right, or at least not typically. I'm a bit more open to it these days, but I generally would rather play a new game instead of playing the same game online (i.e., after beating MW2, I'd want to play Mirror's Edge, Stalker, Fear 1/2, Crysis, The Darkness, etc., instead of just playing more MW2 online). I actually don't really disagree, although since I didn't play MW online, I don't really have that much of an opinion on it. I do like the general ideas they implemented, and hope that these ideas will incorporated into similar games (for some reason, I thought other PC games may have done some of them earlier, although I might be wrong). My only complaints about MW1 were about the single-player, and even then, I wouldn't call it bad or anything (were definitely some good/great moments in the campaign). But it needed a lot of work to match up with other great FPS games IMO (some of which had great single-player and multiplayer). FWIW, I'm not a FPS hater. Or even a MW hater per se (maybe think it is a bit overrated, but that's about it). Yep. Some games will continue to stay turn-based, although they will require more strategy, so that's not a big deal (a bit like Chess actually). But FF is definitely introducing more action-based gameplay, as are a few other games. It is a good move, and one that I appreciate. Turn-based combat with random encounters are elements of JRPGs that were getting old. Of course, there have been action JRPGs since the NES/SNES era, if not earlier. No doubt about it. To be fair, not all JRPGs require a ton of hours. Folklore was maybe around 20 or so IIRC. Others can be beat in around 30 hrs or so (Crisis Core seemed a bit short IIRC?). A bit short for my tastes, but not bad. Other games may take a while to beat, but they're actually somewhat easy to get into. For example, for Valkyria Chronicles, you never really have to ask around for directions to a cave. To advance, you just start the next battle via the menu. Do that enough times, and eventually you'll finish the game. That said, seeking out hidden caves is definitely something that can be a good thing, depending on the game and the implementation. I certainly don't mind a few puzzles that may require some thinking in my video games. But yeah, FPS games definitely tend to be easier to get into. Still, millions of gamers play Final Fantasy as well as some WRPGs like Oblivion, Fallout 3, Mass Effect, etc., which all have similar game design in these aspects (puzzles, lengthy games, etc.). BTW, as probably apparent by this post, I wasn't attacking FPS games (outside of maybe my "recycled content" argument), which you seemed to be defending. I was more so defending JRPGs, or comparing some trends in JRPGs to other genres. I don't know. I can never seem to avoid these type of discussions. In the November thread, I think we'll debate whether downloadable games are better than retail games.
there is no argument on mortal kombat vs street fighter. one is a good movie, the other is a real video game.
To me and others, the multiplayer is the main course, the campaign is the side dish. The trailer for the campaign of MW2 does look freaking good though. you have lots of different terrain and scenarios. I debated on getting Halo ODST, but I know MW2 is coming out the next month, so that MW2 gets my cash. Another game with 'recycled' gameplay is guitar hero/rock band.. but people love it!
What? Really? You actually think the first Mortal Kombat movie was good?.......I agree completely. Thought I was one of the only people alive that truly enjoyed it. Mortal Kombat is a completely acceptable franchise though. Nowhere on the level of Street Fighter, but the games, on the whole, are pretty good. The Chun Li movie wasn't completely terrible.....
should i rent the chun li movie? it got the worst ratings i've ever seen. the original street fighter movie was pretty entertaining and threw some homage to the game the capcom barrels (like the bonus stage) the six button joystick bison was using all the special moves (the lame ryu fireball) vega fighting in a cage plus they got cammy!!
I DL'ed on the PSN. I wouldn't recommend renting it, though. Unless you count that as renting. One quick viewing is enough. I wouldn't watch it more than once. It would probably become worse the more times you watch it. Just watch for a good time. If you go into it with an eagle eye for the inconsistencies with the video game, you probably won't make it past the fact that Chun Li is Canadian. If you want a bit of series interlacing, Gen is played by none other than Liu Kang! (Robin Shou) Now that Dragonball movie..... I'm staying well, well away from.
got a chance to play the full game of Brutal Legend today and it was awesome. The demo was cool but the game itself is funny as hell.
This Demon's Souls game is having me thinking...kinda came out of nowhere for me and I had already pre-planned my future time to video games to R&C: Tools of destruction, Madden 10, Uncharted 2, R&C: A Crack in time, and Forza 3. And thats just for October.
I finally got my copy of Demon's Souls last night. Lots of fun, and I only died twice (one was mandatory). Of course, I kind of cheated and went with the Royalty class, which makes the early parts of the game a lot easier. Combat seems a bit better than what I originally expected (and fun!). And something about those dragons in 1-1 really impresses me...or perhaps really scares me to be more accurate. I think there is one spot in 1-1 where there is some pretty good equipment maybe 50-100 yards away. But another 100 yards or so from that are two dragons, one of which seems to be staring at you, daring you to try to take it. I thought about for a moment, and quickly decided to come back at a later time...once I'm around level 100 or so maybe (actually have no idea how tough the dragons really are, but they seem intimidating). Really fun game so far, and I definitely recommend PS3 owners check it out. If nothing else, just to reward the developers for putting out a game like this. Fortunately, I've read a lot about how the game seems to be sold out in a lot of places. Atlus probably didn't ship out a lot of copies, but that does seem encouraging. Hope it at least gets to 100K in sales the first month. BTW, here's a good reference for the game: http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/intro
Everything Ive read about Demon's Souls has been great...one thing Im not quite understanding is the thing about entering someone else's game or having people invade yours, etc... Seems really interesting. This game was totally under the radar.
I believe the way it work is that any random player can freely join your game and PK you. That kinda sucks IMO.
The Wiki link I posted has a pretty good description of the online stuff: http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/online http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/faqs (FAQ with an online section) I'm currently not logged in to the PSN yet, mostly because I want to figure out the game mechanics before people start randomly jumping into my game and killing me (although it sounds like a lot of people go 15+ hours without encountering any black phantoms). Definitely sounds pretty cool. Here is one encounter I read from NeoGAF: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=17945952&postcount=9302 It actually sounds pretty cool IMO. It may sound bad, but keep in mind that you're always dying in this game, so it isn't really a big deal if a black phantom kills you. And, of course, if you kill him/her, extra goodies for you. In fact, note that this only can happen if you are in body form IIRC (or whatever it is called). If you're in soul form, I don't think you can be attacked by a phantom. And you'll probably be in soul form for most of the game. If it is that big of a deal though, you can log out of the PSN and do what I'm currently doing. I think there are also items and magic that can boot a black phantom, although I might be wrong (even if I'm right, they're probably rare/hard to get).
I think the multiplayer aspect of the game is fresh and fascinating. Im thinking Uncharted may take a backseat to Demon's Souls for me. Im just so confused now. Forza, MWII, Uncharted, R&C, Demon's Souls, God of War Collection, Assassin's Creed II, FIFA 10...somethings gotta give. Wish the release dates would be a little more spread out bc Im going to end up buying all of them and devoting about 5 hours to each.
Yeah, i tend to only get games around Christmas time because that is when almost all of them come out. I have made a decision to only get 3 games (Modern Warfare 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and Assasin's Creed 2). There are a ton that I want, but just don't have the time and money for.
I'd probably recommend getting this over Uncharted (or any of those other games actually). Not because Demon's Souls is better (it might be), but because it is probably the only game in that list that isn't guaranteed say ~100K in sales (and thus, isn't as likely to get a sequel). In fact, most of those games will also likely become Greatest/Platinum Hits, so it makes it a bit easier to pick them up later on. Funnily enough, Q1 2010 will probably be worse. FFXIII, GT5, BioShock 2 (IIRC), Alpha Protocol (I think?), Heavy Rain, Mass Effect 2, God of War 3, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell, etc. Though some of those might be delayed to late 2010...as they probably should be.
Yeah, there really isnt a break in the schedule, as there are some heavy hitters coming up to the plate early next year. Hoping for some delays to allow me to play things out a bit. FFXIII, GT5, ME2, GoW 3, and Heavy Rain are the ones Im aiming towards. A few of those will be coming out circa March, so hopefully I can clear out some games from now until then. Im heavily leaning towards forgetting about Uncharted for the time being and picking up Demon's Souls...which is sad because I had been waiting for so long to get Uncharted, and now Im giving that up for a game that I hadnt heard about until a week ago.
