has anyone picked up the new nba live 10? I am trying to find a way to rip one of the songs from the game (unreleased beastie boys track)
I guess I don't really see the comparison though. Or at least how JRPGs are any more stale than other genres (I sort of admit that games in general are having problems recycling gameplay) As mentioned, FF, the most popular JRPG, usually has no problems coming up with new gameplay in each game. This can even include the spinoffs (Tactics, Dissidia, Revenant Wing, Crisis Core, etc). The Kingdom Hearts games (probably 2nd most popular JRPG) seem to incorporate lots of new gameplay elements in each game IMO (especially handhelds vs consoles). Already addressed the SMT series. Don't know if there is a 3rd most popular JRPG in the US, but I'm going to give it to SMT. The JRPG genre has suffered a bit, especially in NA. But that has more to do with putting out good games as opposed to games with fresh new gameplay IMO (e.g., The Last Remnant...although some say this game is awesome). Although even then, the good ones seem to struggle in NA (Valkryia Chronicles, Persona 4, ToV, etc.), so that probably doesn't really matter. Compared to other genres (sports, racing, action, shooters, etc.), it doesn't seem all that stale in terms of gameplay content, or at least I don't see it that way personally. This all kind of ignores the fact that JRPGs tend to be the most story-heavy games as well, and most of these games have done a decent job of coming up with new stories (see P4). Although some do a much better job than others. Perhaps I'm ignoring the aspects of these games that are being recycled and becoming stale.
Ah, but that's what I'm saying; do you believe that other genres, such as say shooters, are stale and recycled? That's my point. When, such as the discussion that was going on earlier, you take a game like MW and say it's 'recycled' or the 'same game', it seems unfair when that could just as easily be applied to a genre like JRPGs. I'm not saying that it's correct, but that generalization can be applied in both areas where there are plenty of cookie cutter, recycled entries in each genre. EDIT: Now, if you are saying that JRPGs are more 'fresh' than all the other genres, then I can't agree with that. I think they have suffered from that same recycled gameplay issues as every other genre has. All the covers with androgynous Japanese characters with huge swords run together just as easily as the shooter covers with bald marines.
Ah, I guess I see your point. Although I think picking JRPGs was the worst example to prove your point IMO, which I think is what threw me off. Although personally, I do think the FPS genre has been a bit stale (on consoles), although that may be due to the amount of FPS games more than anything. But that's my opinion, and probably not worth debating. FWIW, I was under the assumption that dback816 was pointing out that CoD/Modern Warfare would be an annual release for Activision, which prompted the "recycled content" comment (if Infinity Ward/Activision can keep the series fresh with that type of schedule, kudos to them). Not so much a comment about (console?) FPS games in general. But I might be wrong. Definitely didn't try to say that (JRPGs are not immune to recycling some things). Although personally, that stuff doesn't really bother me. I certainly wouldn't mind a bit more creative designs with these characters (both bald marines and androgynous heroes), but as long as they show some creativity for the gameplay and plot, I couldn't really care less. In gameplay design and plot though, I'd probably argue that JRPGs tend to be good at creating new experiences compared to other genres. Look at FF12 vs FF13 compared to MW1 and MW2 (or maybe to be more fair...um...GT4 and GT5). They certainly have some issues in recycling content, but not to the extent of other genres IMO.
Yeah that's more or less what I was trying to get at, though I don't think FPS are any more or less stale than JRPGs. It's much the same, in fact; there are a lot of the rather generic ones, but the ones that are really good have plenty of different ideas/gameplay. Just like JRPGs. As far as MW goes, just FYI; there's only been one other MW. This is the second one. The previous 'annual' releases were WWII games and even then they were done by alternating studios under Activision's banner.
exactly, MW takes a completely fresh view on the FPS. You have earn more XPs to get more weapons and 'perks'. Plus the many different types of weapons/perks adds to the complexity of the teamwork. having your team call in an air strike, having someone place claymores near the target. having a sniper. and for skill? this requires fast thinking and communication. also the sense of realism is cool. I'm not against all Japanese games. I mean, Street Fighter is clearly a superior Japanese game that isn't a boring JRPG.
To get better at FPS games you need practice and skill. To get better at JRPGs you need to buy the hint book at Gamestop.
you can definitely tell online who practices and has skill in COD. To be good in COD, you have to have a lot of teamwork and coordination. That is why I loved the online play of both COD and Left4Dead.
May have to agree to disagree. I do agree that some elements of JRPGs have become stale, and that the genre can easily become just as stale as any other genre. That said, IMO, it is definitely not as stale as the (console) FPS genre, at least right now. I've enjoyed some of the new ideas by some FPS games, but I think on the whole, there are a lot less things being recycled among JRPGs than FPS games. Folklore, FF13, Persona, VC, Disgaea, Demon's Souls (if that counts), The Last Remnant, etc., seem to bring a lot more "fresh" ideas than COD, Halo, KZ, Resistance, BioShock (if that counts), etc., IMO. In fact, one thing you might notice is that, unlike most other genres, most JRPG sequels tend to start COMPLETELY over with their plot (best example is FF, which actually tends to create entirely new universes for each game). R2/KZ2/H3/etc. were just continuations of the previous games (same/similar settings and characters), and the others tend to be not that different (maybe just different time period or location). And those were all console JRPGs, which have arguably been more stale than handheld JRPGs. Still called CoD:Modern Warfare 2. I'm aware of the new direction, but I don't think it will change Activision's approach to the franchise. IW will release MW2 this year, Treyarch will release COD7 (using Infinity Ward's engine) next year, and IW will probably have a new MW game ready for 2011 (assuming I haven't missed some announcements). This is Activision we're talking about. You obviously haven't played Demon's Souls, or even the SMT games. As I mentioned, Demon's Souls has an online component. Even if all it took was a guidebook to easily defeat all the offline enemies in the game (note: it doesn't), you still have players jumping into your game and attacking your character. I don't think the guidebook has an entry on how I can defeat Cokebabies' Knight character. Personally, I didn't ever really die that much in COD4 IIRC. I'll probably die 15-20 times in the first day playing Demon's Souls. And that's if I'm doing good AND reading the guidebook. To be fair, Demon's Souls is unlike most JRPGs (again, I wouldn't even call it a JRPG). But I think even other JRPGs require skill. Go play SMT:Nocturne on hard (including beating the hardest boss) and tell me you disagree. Being offline and turn-based, these games certainly require a different sort of skill compared to other games though. Then again, there are also games like Devil Summoner 2 (SMT gameplay in real-time), Folklore, Crisis Core, Valkyria Chronicles, etc., that offer real-time combat. Again, I want to stress that not all JRPGs are like Final Fantasy in regards to the skill required to beat them. I like Final Fantasy, but it is a piece of cake to complete generally (some optional bosses can be challenging). In 13, they even replenish your party's HP after battle. Quite the challenge it seems.
Looking forward to that, but I want to wait to see if PES can catch up to FIFA after a few off years.
lol sales I take it musicians and artists are also measured by how much they earn? Movies and TV programs all about revenue right? Star athletes of today are all automatically superior to their older counter parts in the 70's and 80's because of salary and how many seats they fill in the stadium? Anyways to be good at COD4 and beyond, just throw grenades. There, you just got your 9180921 achievements or whatever is it that you Madden folks "play" games for Calling MW and its inevitable hundreds of sequels and spinoffs "games" is just silly. They're an even bigger grind than your average korean MMO.
I don't know why some people are putting Madden and Call of Duty in the same genre, but I guess those people don't really play any good video games. i respect the Madden players, the last Madden I was any good at was for PS2 (the one with Mike Vick on the cover). When I played online, there were some people that were just so awesome at that game. they had great knowledge of football, and audibled out of all my defenses. I understand that some people don't like online competition, but that's what makes the games last longer.
Lol it's amazing how defensive and ....but I digress, I kind of started this dumb argument and I really shouldn't have. So I apologize. So good for you that you enjoy grinding and online fps, I had my fill of that nearly 10 years ago, shrug welcome to video games I guess
Forza 3 got a 9.4 on IGN...they say its the best racer ever made and that GT5 has its work cut out for it if it wants to better Forza. http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/103/1033110p1.html

I hope GT5 is much better than Prologue -- GTP is a little dull especially at first -- I felt like I was playing GT4 with better graphics. Btw - old game but I just picked up Dead Space at Best Buy for 20 bucks new.
It's funny. All this started when Tinman posted a November game in the October thread. Could have all been avoided. I have the Korean version of Demon's Souls. I played it up to lvl 70 and let my friend borrow it. I'm going to buy the American version just to support the game and in the hope that they will make a second game in the future. From the gameplay videos of the American version, seems that there aren't any real differences. The only difference that I've read of are the American servers. Then there is Uncharted 2. That will be bought and played.
What's your definition of recycling? So all racing games are basically recycled versions of Turbo? RC, you don't play online multiplayer FPS right? I've been playing FPS since Doom, and to me, MW is completely new. Adding RPG attributes (ranks by XP), customization of character's skills (weapons, perks) and different types of gameplay (domination, headquarters.. etc) for the blind FPS haters, they think it's just quake, shoot and respawn. that's not the case. For JRPGs, I think they are trying to make more action based instead of turn style so it won't be so mechanical. You don't need to report NeoGaff for next month, cause we ALL KNOW that MW2 will be the #1 selling game. People like that game for a reason. And it's not because it's the same 'story' line or repetitive gameplay Also, some people (with jobs) don't have the time to play these long RPGs, they prefer something they pick up and go and not run around asking villagers where the hidden cave is. shooters/fps games are usually pretty straight forward for the casual gamer.
