Michelle Obama lives in a mansion, attended Harvard Law School, has a sweet high-paying gig as VP of community affairs at an area hospital, has fame and fortune, and still apparently has no reason to be proud of America. Tell me something is wrong with that. Especially when you compare other conditions that blacks live in on this very earth. She is disgusting, grotesque and ungrateful. The people who buy into Wright's sermons are ungrateful. America gives them so much opportunity and they just complain about everything. BILLIONS of the world's poorest would trade places with them in a heartbeat and be overjoyed. Virtually the entire continent of Africa would JUMP at the chance to be in their shoes. So ungrateful.

    *sigh*

Well, it's painfully obvious that you won't stop your attempts to hyperbolate this one issue, as it seems to be the only dirt you can fling at Obama...so there's no use arguing with you.

Well, at least we'll have some good memories...good ol' hypocrisy.

    TJ,

Hate to break it to you, but there are definitely studies that support what Obama said.

I remember reading a lot on aversive racism awhile ago now, and John Dovidio has done some interesting stuff. Don't remember the specific article title (mid-90s?), but there was one where he put people of one race in a situation where someone was in some sort of physical danger, and he mixed and matched the race of the the bystander (or potential hero) and the person being attacked. In general, people were more likely to help someone of their own race... but this effect was easily the most magnified with whites, who helped a black person in danger only half as many times as they helped a white person (something like 37% of the time vs 76% of the time).

Additionally, Harvard is doing an ongoing study on all sorts of implicit biases... one of the many is race (specifically white vs. black). As I recall this showed that 75% of white people showed some level of implicit bias against blacks (or for whites, however you wanna look at it). I don't recall the number for blacks, but it was noticeably lower.

Obama's comment about "seeing somebody on the street she doesn't know, there's a reaction in her that's been bred into our experiences..." is obviously saying that white people will generally be more wary of a big black guy walking up behind them than a big white guy. That's racism, and data supports the fact that it happens more often than not. Implicit biases exist. Even as a white male I have a hard time disagreeing with what he said. And I'm still registered as a Republican, and I haven't yet decided whether to vote for McCain or Obama. I'm not sitting here singing the guy's praises. He's not perfect. I know. But I think you're guilty of some hyperbole in your posts.

Drexlerfan, show me the study. Provide a link or the study. Back it up.

For you to sit here and defend a racial slur is really horrible. Obama is just trying to get himself out of trouble by trying to call whites racist. It's ludicrous and shameful, and no study that you think you remember changes that. Obama is a hypocrite, plain and simple. He says that he doesn't tolerate racism and that his campaign transcends race. That's total trash. That's hypocrisy. He is intensely focused on race because that's how he guilts some whites into voting for him. Many are starting to see through that fraud, courtesy of Jeremiah Wright's insanity, and Obama's honor for him.

    Can't help myself...

Way to jump on someone for being a hypocrite by generalizing a group of people.

...And then proceeding to generalize a group of people yourself.

    Calm down a little bit.

I find it very insulting that you seem to be implying that I'm making these things up or that I'm an apologist for Obama. Again, you will not find me supporting Obama over McCain or McCain over Obama anywhere. I'm a registered Republican, but I consider myself moderate. I'm not here with an agenda, posting dirt on one candidate and praise for another either way. You'll never find me doing that. I'm just trying to point you at some facts on an issue I just happen to have read a fair bit about.

The home of the Harvard Implicit Association Tests can be found here: https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/demo/ (not hard to find, all you had to do was google "harvard implicit")
Unfortunately you have to actually go through and take the test in order to get at the summary data, which is kinda annoying... I suppose they do it that way because they want as many people to take the tests as possible.

All I can give you as far as the Dividio article is my guess (after some searching) at what the title is: it was probably "The Subtlety of Racism" in Training and Development, Volume 47 (1993). Ended up reading it because I majored in HR along with IT... HR was kind of a secondary thing. I obviously don't have access to the article anymore, and there's nowhere I know of where you can get it for free. Sorry. If you're that interested, then go get it and read up.

I myself don't need to, because I remember it clearly enough already. I assure you everything I said in my previous post was derived from data.

Is Jesse Jackson a typical white person too? Didn't he also say something like he felt relieved when he found out the person walking behind him turned out to be white. And Pastor Wright is such a typical black preacher.

To respond to the thread topic, Obama was saying:

    1. His grandmother was a typical "white person who...[was scared of certain black people]"

    NOT

    2. His grandmother was a "typical white person" who was scared of certain

In Statement No. 1, there is no racial prejudice. In the second, there is a clear underlying stereotype at work. But that is neither here nor there since he clearly meant Statement No. 1, while certain people (who probably know better) are trying to attribute Statement No. 2 to Obama.

I so love watching bbs noobs attempt to get The Conquistadork and Mini-dork to engage in honest debate.

hey guys, got some advice for ya.

Go outside, face your brick wall, lean forward very quickly till head impacts wall....

repeat till your head is bloody and you get a concussion

It is a more productive use of your time than taking the Dork Twins seriously.

The problem here is you got it completely backward-- look/listen to the pauses in his radio broadcast. This is the more accurate transcription:

~"My grandmother was a typical white person... who.......was scared.........."

    AND NOT

~"My grandmother was a typical... white person who was scared................"

Even the transcription graphic of the radio broadcast shows the pause between person and who.

This really is a good sign for Barack. The rightwing wackos really have nothing of substance to attack him on so all they are reduced to is racist attacks that any rational person will see through. This will also backfire on independents that are tired of the politics of personal distruction and are ready for America to come together as one once again and tackle the issues that truly matter.

Sorry, who is the racist? The racist is the guy that makes a broad-sweeping generalization against whites and slurs them. Obama did that. Obama is a hypocrite. Sorry who is the uniter? Obama? The guy who is inserting a wedge in between him and America by honoring an anti-semitic bigot, racist and a man who hates America? Sorry, who is the politician talking about a new style of politics? Obama? The guy parroting populist economic bumper-sticker slogans, slamming the oil companies, slamming the troops' efforts in Iraq, and insulting John McCain, Man of Honor? Uniter? NO NO NO! Try hypocrite and fraud.

mcmark, have you no retort for the very salient points I brought up? Telling that there is no defense of racism from the Obama camp. Very telling...

Listening to you, of all people, whine about who's a racist has been simply delicious.

How's that 600 delegate lead for Hillary going? LOL!!!

Look at the racism on display here, from Obama's spiritual leader and close confidant. Utter hypocrisy from Obama. Unbelievable. His candidacy is fraudulent.

Fast forward to the 1:38 mark in this video. Is that Obama in the brown suit on the left slapping Wright on the back? I could be mistaken, but that could be him!

No you didn't. You've hated him from the moment you first heard of him.

R2K gets best-post-in-thread award, btw. Nice find on the articles, Drexlerfan.

I am looking forward to the "Obama trims his nails with Iranian-made clippers!!!!" thread -- that seems to be the clear trajectory.
