His outbursts are legitimate issues, but Wright has done a lot of good to offset the flaming rhetoric. I wouldn't sit in that church for 20 years, but each person is bound by his own loyalties.

 

I'd say 20 years of honoring the man is quite a statement.

It's quite a statement that you had to put "OWNED" at the end of the end of your own post, as you knew no one else would do it for you.

Jefferson's probably my favorite American ever. But then there is that whole slavery thing.

I think one of the problems we have in this country is we want our leaders to live up to the image of a leader we have from grade school when we were reading about Washington and the Cherry Tree and Lincoln and the slaves. You don't learn until later on about George owning slaves and doing stuff a good politician does or about Lincoln saying this:

If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause.

So, even though we know that nobody in our history was above politics, we still hope for it on some level... me included at times. Yet it is so much more rewarding to take these people off the pedestal and see what they accomplished in spite of their flaws and being bound by their times... and to try and imagine who has a similar capacity in our own time.

 

I don't think anyone is listening to this kind of static anymore. The 'Obama is a Muslim' sort of shut off the attention to the lunatic fringe. It's not influencing anyone to change their minds. We are just sort of trading water till the summer nominations and then this fall we will get some substantive debates.

The fringe should save their ammo till October. That's when the Swifties will bring their all out atack.
