Obama's Speech in Response to the Wright Controversy

This conspiracy theory goes far beyond the church. It may be ugly, and a belief that those outside the black community do not understand, but if studies show that almost 50 percent of African Americans believe this to be true, how can you say it is unreasonable?

Show me a church that preaches only the truth... This type of fear-mongering and reliance on myth and urban legend goes far beyond Rev. Wright's church.

I'm sure if we searched through Joel Osteen's sermons we'd find similar misstatements, though probably less offensive to the average white voter. Give me five minutes and any broadcast of the 700 Club, and I'm confident that I could edit together a string of pretty ignorant and unreasonable statements that would alienate just as many people as Wright's tirade.

Maybe people here should stop getting their "facts" from YouTube and an internet message board and seek the truth on Wright. Much easier to hold other people to a higher standard than ourselves, though.

ah, but here's the difference, Wright said God Dam America, not God dam Muslims or Jews or Catholics or liberal supreme court judges.

How is that any different? If he would have said "God Damn Republicans and Conservative Christians" would that be any less offensive? He's criticizing his government from a moral perspective. Perhaps since 9/11, we've forgotten about the First Amendment.

Don't be blinded by some patriotic notion of nationalism to think that singling out any group is less severe than singling out "America".

 

This speech made me respect Obama more. I think he used this controversy to thoughtfully talk about an issue that is too often used as a wedge issue, or completely ignored. The nuance he showed in his analysis was very impressive. I will happily vote for this man to be president. I haven't said that in a long time.

 

"Damning" America doesn't bother me -- that's his right of free speech.

What bothers me is the total ignorance exhibited by the Idiot Jeremiah Wright. How can anyone be credible when espousing whoppers like the U.S. inventing AIDS to kill blacks, etc. etc.?

Most of Barack's speech was brilliant but fell short in allaying white America's concern about black racism.

How did Hillary find these Wright hate tapes and get this firestorm started? She is absolutely devious and will do anything to win.

I will admit I can't. But I wouldn't put it past her.

 

I criticize Hillary as much as anyone, but I don't think she was responsible for this. She's actually told her staff not to go into that area *at all*. It's both a good thing from her and it benefits her to let the media run with it on their own without having to get dirty with it.

It's been known for a while, and it was just a matter of time before it came out. I think with the 6 weeks off between contests, now is the first time the media has had to really focus on anything besides the day-to-day campaigning. And frankly, it's the best time for it to have come out for Obama. If it had happened in middle of a string of primaries, it would have been a nightmare to deal with.

 

Good logic from you, Major, which is no surprise. Far better for Senator Obama to have this hashed out before Pennsylvania, which he is going lose, then later. Heck, if this was something Ms. Clinton was responsible for, didn't it occur to anyone that she would have used it long before now, and not before a state she has every expectation of winning and is closer to the end of this process than it is to the beginning?
