Exclusive: MoveOn To Close Its 527 In Response To Obama's Candidacy

MoveOn, the advocacy group supporting Barack Obama, has decided to permanently shutter its 527 operation, partly in response to the Illinois Senator's insistence that such groups should not spend on his behalf during the general election, I've learned from the group's spokesperson.

MoveOn's decision, which will dramatically impact the way it raises money on Obama's behalf, is yet another sign of how rapidly Obama is taking control of the apparatus that's gearing up on his behalf.

By shuttering its 527, MoveOn is effectively killing its ability to raise money in huge chunks from labor unions, foundations, and big donors who would give over $5,000. The decision doesn't mean MoveOn will stop spending on Obama's behalf. Instead it will raise money exclusively with its political action committee, whose average donation is below $50 and will even be raising money with things like bake sales starting this weekend.

To put this in perspective, MoveOn's 527 raised $20 million for the general election in 2004 -- and at least half of that came from donations over $5,000.

"This is an affirmation that we, like Senator Obama, believe that this election can be won by ordinary Americans giving small donations," MoveOn spokesperson Ilyse Hogue told me.

Fantastic! Let Barack mold his own campaign. MoveOn didn't do Kerry any favors, although they thought they did at the time. Man, that's really great news. I hope any other Democratic 527's do the same. Obama doesn't need them.

    Impeach Bush.

so this means moveon smears will be produced by their PAC, not their 527? same wolf, different sheep's clothes.

I challange McCain to do the same!

If he's not strong enough to stand up to 527s, how can he be strong enough to stand up to terrorists?

This election is proving to be the most enjoyable fun.

I can't wait for the next eight years of re-building the nation.

What it means is that Obama's going to be in charge of the message between now and November and he'll have a bunch of money to get that message out.

    Sweating yet?

No, it means that Obama stuck by what he said and asked MoveOn to put the kibosh on their 527. Now if McCain would do the same with the GOP 527s, Obama would accept public funding.

Of course, McCain has already said that he just can't do anything, so I guess Obama will have to rely on small donations from the millions of Americans who believe in him.

This illustrates something, including why electing Obama is a risk. If he wins and has a big Dem majority in the Senate, he will be a very powerful president who will be able to ram his agenda through. If McCain wins, he will be very ineffective, neither Dems nor the GOP will give him the time of day and the campaign for 2012 will start right after he's elected.

    apparently, they're not a 527. next?

"The group is organized under section 501(c)4 of the tax code,[37] meaning that it can lobby on issues but cannot expressly advocate for specific candidates. Its stated mission is 'to ensure a strong national defense and a powerful effort to confront and defeat global terrorism'," Mike Allen wrote August 22, 2007, in The Politico.[38]"

I was trying to figure out how that would be a positive, myself. Bush gets pardoned? I don't see that as a positive.

Freedom's watch is a 527, expressly formed in response to moveon, that was masquerading as a 501 which is why the DNCC is haing the IRS investigate its status.

In any event it doesn't matter, Freedom's Watch has been a complete flop thus far and isn't really much to be afraid of.

The O-train is going to obliterate it and the rest , I am supremely confident and cocksure of this.
