Agreed regarding tort reform. They need to look no further than Texas. Reform was passed in 2003 and the cost of health care has continued to increase. Tort reform is a myth pushed by the insurance companies to pad their bottom line.
maybe the your guy is a little slow? at least Jindal had counter arguments to specific portions of Obama's SOU speech he was listening attentively to Obama's speech and spontaneously modifying his rebuttal..
He's not my "guy" Don't even know where you got that idea. I'm not defending him. You can't put together a quick rebuttal against a specific speech like Obama just delivered as compared to a more general speech like the SOU where you have a pretty good idea of his talking points.
I don't think that was the goal. The goal was to turn public opinion. I think he hit on all the major issues - maybe a little too long, though. I thought some of the best parts of the speech were towards the end, and I don't know how many people might have tuned out by then. We'll see - it certainly will get a bump in public opinion. He seized control of message for one night - but the key will be consistently keeping the Dems in control of the message. That means Dems all repeating the same basic things over and over instead of progressives whining about one part of the speech and blue dogs whining about another. If that happens, we go right back to talking about death panels and socialist government takeovers tomorrow, and it won't really matter.
was still at work during the speech and am trying to find a video of it. anyone got a link? did he give a specific plan or was it more of an emotional argument?
I wish Obama had stopped his speech, asked who said that, and then called him out as example of a congressperson only concerned about politics.
And McCain has already called him out. He called it totally disrespectful and called for Wilson to apologize. Props go to McCain.
I would have blown my load had Obama stopped mid-speech and gone Socratic on his ass reaching back to his days at UChi.
He should have. It might have finally spurred some generic disdain for and shame from the looney-bin right.
They couldn't make a less biased poll? 45% Democrats vs 18% Republicans? Seems split by party lines still.
From the link I posted earlier:[rquoter]When Bill Clinton delivered his big speech to the Congress on health care 16 years ago, his approval rating shot up by 10 points almost instantenously. Now, Clinton wound up squandering that and then some (and be prepared -- if Obama does get some sort of bounce out of the speech, some of it will probably evaporate almost immediately). But Obama's timing is better than Clinton's, coming toward the end rather than the beginning of the process, and at a moment where the press corps is exceedingly skeptical and where expectations may be unrealistically low. And even a temporary bounce might prove sufficient, since the health care bill has already passed out of 4 out of 5 Congressional committees and doesn't have that many more hurdles to clear. The more successful Obama's speech is, the more eager Democrats will be to engage in a 4-6 week sprint to get a health care bill to the President's desk while they have momentum on their side.[/rquoter]You don't think that speech was enough to encourage congress to get a bill passed, or you don't think it was enough to get better reform passed?
He says this because his health insurance does not cover his 900th doctor's visit in a month for more oxycontin.
