No.... more people can be teachers than can be doctors. It is far harder to become a doctor, and thus there is greater pay for doctors. The level of education necessary to become a teacher is small compared to a doctor.
I agree.... get rid of the teachers that do not put in the effort and work. This will be hard though, since often times the teachers putting in the least time and effort are veteran teachers. I do not have a problem with teachers making more money if they are actually putting in huge amounts of time and effort. However, I do not want someone coasting by, and putting forth very little effort making more money than they already are. I do not dislike teachers, nor do I have a problem with them making money. I do have a problem with a victim complex that I see in some teachers. There are many harder jobs that pay less and are less secure. If I thought that being a teacher was THAT easy, I wouldn't of gone to law school...
victim mentality? you wanna know why that is. take a look at some of the responses in this thread. people bashing teachers left and right. im not saying there arent bad teachers, there are, but the way the system is, parents/family have to place emphasis on school as well. with the limited time you get with students, you have to have parents/siblings whoever there to help outside the classroom etc. not to mention, in inner city schools, you have parents treating the school like a daycare. they dont care about their childs education, just that they can drop their kid off and not have to worry about them. this isnt just in inner cities, it can happen anywhere. but again, you're making it sound like teachers use the excuse of parents for why their student isnt doing well. well, if a kid isnt doing his homework, and his parents dont care. you can be there to help/make them do it. i get the argument that with the time off they should be paid the money they get. its a legitimate argument, but look at all the people complaining about the education in america. people want it improved, as they should, so do i, doesnt it make sense to pay more so that the young bright minds in america instead of maybe going in an engineering field, might take a second look at teaching if the pay was better? teaching isnt for everyone, so maybe some of those people dont go that direction thats fine, but dont you think overtime it will develop an influx of great teachers? then again, teaching is so easy, most parents could enter a classroom now and do just as good a job as whoever the teacher is.... EDIT: i'd also like to add, as some others have said, that the teaching for or to a test that is going on in schools isnt helping, that needs changed
It makes sense for a free market system to determine the pay like other professions, not teacher unions and the state.
Wait, you are honestly trying to sell to me that summer is not nearly 3 months but is only 3.5 weeks? REALLY? I have never seen that anywhere, certainly not in Des Moines, Houston, Baytown, San Marcos or Austin.......all the US cities I have lived. In Manchester UK, they go a lot longer but they get lots of 2 week breaks and summer is like a month...big difference there. And no, I don't want to sign up, I did the substitute teaching thing after college while I looked for another job....and I loved it, but the pay is too small. Now at the collegiate level pay can be huge....but not general school teaching at least from what I have heard..... I think teachers should be paid more, but they should also be held accountable and be tested on the subject matter they teach.....put in a bonus structure for the better teachers....make it more of an acheivement oriented program like the rest of the world does. Teaching has become a government job, and that is the main issue. DD
Good post... Yes, if the pay was higher, schools would be able to be more selective in whom they hire as teachers. Look no further than college professors. However, I do not think that would solve all the problems. I personally do not have a problem paying teachers more based on performance. However, I do not want the "dead wood" in schools to remain. Half the teachers I worked with were not there to better the lives of children, they were there because they liked the vacation and hours, or the security or because the pay was competitive. We need a system that compensates really good teachers and gets rid of the others. I would even support the best teachers, the real true, few that love their job and make a difference, making over $100,000.
I taught for a few years... and if the summer vacation was only 3.5 weeks, it was the LONGEST 3.5 weeks of my life. Also, when called into school during vacation periods, we NEVER stayed all day, and it was always laid back and stressless. I think this guy needs to try driving a cab or working as roughneck and then we will see how hard his job is.
What school teacher is teaching 12 hour days? Most schools start at 8, so you are saying they stay at school and work until 8 at night? I highly doubt that. I would bet my money that they are home by 3:30
I dunno . . I remember my teachers being there before the bell rang at 8 but . . .that just maybe me Rocket River
One More thing. In the 8 hours that the teacher is teaching . .. when are they suppose to be GRADING? Checking homework? I personally would rather they spend that time TEACHING and Grade at a different time .. . like after school Rocket River
most jobs have some work they need to do after work, that is not exclusive for teachers. Also, teachers do not teach all day, they certainly have off periods.
My wife is at her classroom at 7am every morning, she leaves around 5pm & she gets about 20minutes for lunch...not quite 12 hours, more like 10. But she has worked 3 or 4 long Satudays already this schoolyear. But its the kids that get the 3mo summer, not the teachers, she's there for a week after the kids leave and there 2wks before they get back..and like someone else said, her summer is filled with required classes and classroom prep work. Its not as glorious as some people make it seem. Yes, she makes 50K a year, but thats with a Masters degree and it is her 15th year teaching. You stay at any degreed job for 15yrs and I hope your making at least that much.
some off periods are labled "when you get home". I spent 4 hours last Thursday night helping my wife grade papers. Her "off Period" of 40 minutes each day is spent in meetings and/or dealing with parents.
Let's not forget COMPUTER CLUB CHESS CLUB BAND etc Rocket River . . or is that time considered voluntary?
how do you know? I had plenty of teacher that went home right after school my main point is, teachers are not working longer hours than any other profession, it's simply not true.
You don't know what you are talking about. I'm a teacher and I'm there 1.5 hours before students are even allowed on campus. I also stay about 2 hours after they leave. There are days I am there for 12 hours. Most days it's like 10 hours, but depending on the meetings, upcoming lessons, etc. there are a few times a year when I put in 12 hour days.
