it's because he's chilling with the family instead of meeting with lawmakers. Oh ok. That and 100+ (literally) rounds of golf. We need a leader who's willing to actually roll up his sleeves and work to get something done. Not the selfish guy who chooses to play golf and chill with the family.

Charlotte, North Carolina (CNN) -- President Barack Obama dismissed criticism he doesn't spend enough time developing relationships with Washington deal-makers who can help push his agenda forward.

In an exclusive interview with CNN chief White House correspondent Jessica Yellin, Obama said he is determined to make time for his family.

"Sometimes Michelle and I not doing the circuit and going out to dinners with folks is perceived as us being cool," Obama said. "It actually really has more to do with us being parents."

The president has been criticized from all sides for failing to achieve more bipartisanship, especially given his 2008 campaign pledge to bridge partisan and ideological divides once in office.
Obama: I try to be a hands-on dad
Ex-assistant: Obama leads like he plays

Some of the president's frustrated allies have complained that a seeming reluctance to build relationships with more members of Congress and Washington insiders has made it difficult for him to get business done.

    Romney gets more personal

In the interview, which will air as part of the documentary "Obama Revealed: The Man, The President," Obama suggested he is willing to build those relationships, but often turns down social engagements because he prioritizes time at home with his children.

"Sometimes on the weekends, we may turn down the invitation to this or that or the other just because we're trying to carve out family time," Obama said. "And I think that's sometimes interpreted as me not wanting to be out there slapping backs and wheeling and dealing. That really has more to do with just the stage we are in our lives."

Asked if things would change if he's elected to a second term, Obama said, "My hope is that getting past this election, people will have an opportunity to maybe step back and say, 'You know what? The differences that divide us aren't as important as the common bonds we have as Americans.' "

"And some of that I'm sure will require additional effort on my part. Hopefully, we'll see more effort on the other side, as well," he added.

David Maraniss, who penned biographies of former President Bill Clinton and Obama, said the current president "is not going to become this great transactional politician," like Clinton.

"Bill Clinton was imbalanced. He would spend the hours between 6:00 and 9:00 (p.m.) talking to people in Congress," Maraniss said. "Whereas President Obama is basically with his family during those hours, which is sort of a balanced thing to do but not necessarily good for a president."

One of the president's closest friends and aides, Valerie Jarrett, said Obama "wants to be the kind of dad he never had."

The president has been slammed by Republicans for what they consider an unwillingness to compromise, particularly in legislative matters.

Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine, who worked closely with the president early in his term, said she is not sure Obama "truly understands the relationship and interaction that occurs between the president and the legislative branch."

"Somehow, he thinks, well, the Congress is, you know, that's their job and this is my job," Snowe said. "But we have to really interact with one another, ultimately, to get the job done for the country."

The president said he repeatedly reached out across the aisle in the hope of achieving bipartisan solutions, even at the expense of condemnation from members of his own party. It was the GOP, he said, that made reaching across party lines nearly impossible.

"If anything, I think I received a lot of criticism from my own party for going out of my way to try to solicit Republican cooperation," Obama said.

"The fact of the matter was that politically there was a decision that was made fairly early on, among some of their leadership, that said working with the president is not good politics."

Man, if only Obama spent more time meeting with Republicans in Congress, they would have voted for the stimulus, avoided the whole showdown on debt limit and all that other stuff.

Instead, he had to spend time with his family and play golf. And lets not forget about basketball, Obama played a lot of basketball. You know how his people are with basketball.

Also, when did Bill Clinton become the GOP Patron Saint of Reaching Across the Isle? All these Republicans profess love for Bill now. Back when he was President all his hard work reaching out to the GOP ended up getting his ass impeached.

Bush stopped playing golf while in office out of respect for the troops

Obama laughs and keeps teeing off...

Obama gave up on leading immediately after the nation's rebuke of him in the 2010 midterms. He just threw up his arms and decided there was no chance to LEAD, so instead he fell back into literally the only thing he knows how to do, which is campaign. The cabinet quit meeting, him and his Chief of Staff quit communicating with Republican leadership, and everything became about the next election. It's shameful what he did. He totally abandoned his duties. Instead of even attempting to lead, he began the most divisive, partisan couple of years of attacks/lectures which only made things worse. Gridlock is here to stay with Obama as President. His scorched earth approach has guaranteed that if he wins reelection, NOTHING will get done. Nothing. It's obvious that it's time for a new President. Obama had his chance and was proven to be a failure.

Actually, i believe it started in Congress after Obama's inauguration, gridlock is having more fillibusters in your first 2 years than has been done in the past 50.

I don't really give a crap what they do on their days off.

But if you really want to go there, I'm sure Bush's 967 days of vacation over 8 years trumps every President in history. That's about 10 days off per month.

Obama is going at a pace of about 2 days off per month.

When the liberals advance legislation to the left of Stalin and far removed from what the American public desires, then a filibuster is in order. The American voting public REWARDED Republicans, for blocking as much of Obama's liberal agenda as they did, in 2010 in their complete and total rebuke of Obama in the midterm elections.

The left of Stalin? The American voting public doesn't even know what it wants in terms of actually knowing what their candidates stand for AKA Paul Ryan.

When you have to resort to insults, you've lost any argument among adults.

No one can argue that Obama has failed miserably at bipartisanship. He just won't put in the hard work.

it's much easier for you to try to dodge this topic with you "fly in and hurl insults" approach, but everybody sees through it.

And yet, with all these bad traits that Obama has and how poor of a president you think he is, he'll still have more folks voting for him than Romney in this election...how pathetic is the state of the GOP? Hmmm, now how much vacation time did Bush take during his time in office again? Oh, wait...lets stick to Obama...someone who's spends his time raising his family, not someone who spends his time hunting and fishing during his time off...Obama is such a terrible human being  LOL.
