Which brings me to the question: When did riot gear become so popular for police? At the RNC, most of the cops were wearing riot gear. During Ike recovery, I saw a lot of the cops that I knew personally trade their dress uniforms and .45's for outfits like this and AR-15's. Is it really necessary? I guess the idea of the extra intimidation that this brings bothers me. I can't imagine that ridiculous get ups like these and assault rifles better equip our cops for mob control.

Couple the above with desiring to look like a badass, and PRESTO - instant cop riot gear fetish!

Maybe riot gear is used for deterrent and reduce the possibility of killing innocent people if the crowd does go out of control.

 

I think it is the end result of excessively large and unfocused Homeland Security grants. These police departments get a large grant with very limited provisions for how it is to be spent, and so go out and buy all the toys they always wanted but couldn't justify buying. And since they bought it, they have to use it.

Shame on the Dems for spending money on domestic security. We SHOULD be trying to keep Americans safe by sending troops overseas. We should also be creating jobs by building roads and schools in other countries. God forbid should we spend American money in America.

It would be nice if that cliche were true.

However, one big factor of why the US Dollar was in the crapper so long was because of the amount of $$$ the US govt was borrowing esp to finance the Iraq war.

The primary reason the value of the dollar "rebounded" recently against other currencies, is cause the US mortgage/banking crisis managed to infultrate the global economy and ironically screwed up their economies worse than ours.

 

Isn't the cost a function of how many people show up? Is that really OBama's fault?

A number of things, which you really don't deserve to have told to you, but I'll play ball:

1. Barack Obama has no legislative power, including spending for events. He is not the President. He is not a senator; he resigned that post after winning the election. He is an American who is just waiting to get his due responsibilities. Who signed off on the spending? George W. Bush. Why do you think it's going to cost so much? Because an influx of 2 million+ people in Washington DC requires it.

2. What exactly do you mean by "you people?"

3. As long as the Republican Party continues to pander to people of your ilk, you can enjoy faux-socialism. You cannot win an election as long as you alienate everybody else because, thank God, there are not enough of you tools to go around anymore.
