I'm a little concerned about the expense. As said it does put a lot of people to work. Hopefully these people keep the pressure on Obama and give him support to make major changes in health care an do what is needed to right the economy.

Rather than the amount spent, I am concerned that a lot of the money is being given by corportions and wealthy individuals who are trying to lobby the Obama Administration. I believe these donations should be limited, just like campaign contrbutions.

Oh brother. This sounds like the same immature logic that gets stuff like Houston's wham-bam-tram built.

    $150 million. For a party. That's a waste, brah

The party-goers, not the rest of us tax-payers, should foot the bill for security and all the other expenses. This is elective, unnecessary and wasteful spending in time of unprecedented financial crisis and record deficit.

METRO built that "wham-bam-train" all by itself. It would have been so much better if it wasn't for idiots like Delay and Culberson blocking federal funding. Hell, it would have been EVEN MORE better had it not been blocked back in the 80s. We'd have heavy rail like Washington DC.

Yeah, the financial situation we are in is so comparable to the ones when Bush was inaugurated, genius.

President Obama's first official act should be to go to Area 51, dust off the time machine, and then veto the appropriations request for his own inauguration which President Bush signed off on.

This is funny taken in context of the last eight years.

    What’s the deficit now?

It's only $49 million of federal money, which is only a slight uptick from past inaugurations. I have no problem there.

This is really a very historic event. They have a ton of people coming and I understand why they want to be there. It's the number of people that's driving the costs, and I wouldn't tell people to not go to witness such an historic inauguration. (Especially considering that people will go whether invited or not, so you better have security, infrastructure, etc to handle it or you're going to be in trouble.)

And therein lies the Republican strategy for this topic.

Spend more to accomodate the increased demand? You're wasteful in a time of economic stringency.

Spend less to keep costs down? You're negligent and irresposible when something goes wrong.

Basso and texxx's bitterness is the sweetest nectar to some... if only they realized that.

    Great post, JV. $49M federal.

And there's a chicken-and-egg problem. The more people who head into town, the more it will cost to ward off some sort of horrible slate of problems (bathrooms, warmth, food, security, etc). You want 2M people to come to DC, stand around in the cold for a couple of days eating saltines and fighting for bathrooms?

If there were ever a reason to party, the end of the neocon, religious right era would be the biggest since VJ Day.

How much did it cost the Munchkins to party when the wicked Witch got killed? Because that should be about the template for this gig.

Ding dong , the wicked dicks , the wicked dicks are dead!

Hi-larious comment, because, you know, Bush hasn't wantonly spent a dime of the American people's money during his eight years.

Why has everyone ignored this lil tidbit? The amount of federal money could be higher compared to Clinton/Bush due to inflation and from the fact that about 7 times the amount of people will attend this compared to Bush's inaguration. But 66% of the money is NOT from the govt.

Texxx, what's wrong with using his own money and donations to beef up security and transportation? His money is actually going to help the economy there right?

(also I know you probably will ignore cause you know you posted this for propoganda just to get people riled up)

Obama likes to spend money. That much is obvious. His supporters like to waste money. Bush likes to spend money. First stimulus checks, then a bailout, soon to be another stimulus. The deficit will only continue to spiral out of control. At least wars create jobs...

Maybe they will sell enough Obama shirts, hats, dishes, coins, mugs, & whatever else and boost the economy...
