It would be humongous, because as Boehner reminds me, the American people want their spending cuts - nay, they DEMAND them...(as long as it's not social security/medicare/localized to their city or state and completely borne by others at no cost to themselves)

We must increase economic activity by decreasing economic activity at once.

One thing that I have heard is that there is a mistaken belief among much of the populace that things like iron museums and other such special interest projects make up a very large part of spending when they really represent a miniscule amount. So one reason the Republicans have been successful in their rhetoric is that people don't fully understand what most government spending is for.

That's what happens when 70-80% of the population do not care about how government and politics work.

most people wouldn't understand economics, which isn't a bad thing, its a complicated subject. but i guess it doesn't take a degree to understand what percentage of our money goes where.

I've got nothing but antecdotal evidence to back this up...but if I hear someone complain about foreign aid again and ignore the defense budget, I'm gonna vomit.

What a weakling of a President....

GOP: Hussein, if you don't extend the tax cuts for the rich, we'll cancel the extension for the poor and middle as well.
Conservative Base: Ya, we have to protect the rich even if they use us as a political human shield.
    President: Okayyy

GOP: Hussein, if you don't cut SS, Medicare, and Medicaid, we'll choke the financial market by not raising the debt ceiling as we've ALWAYS done during the Bush II era.
Conservative Base: Ya, we have to cut programs that actually help the 90% of Americans for programs that only help 10% of the Americans who are wealthy.
    President: Okayyy

Tea party rhetoric has made it so the GOP can't bend in this. Even moderate GOP would probably lose the next primaries if they negotiate with Obama.

The fringe has gained a foothold in the GOP that helped them win the house, but has also put them in a corner. That latest proposal seems aimed solely to abdicate ALL responsibility. Was the two thirds majority requirement solely made so GOP can claim that they went against Obama? A simple majority would force us to call their bluff.

This is the problem in a nutshell, somehow 90% of the population thinks the spending problem is 100% caused by food stamps, aid to Pakistan and pork barrel projects like the bridge to nowhere.

It would take all of two minutes to do some research and realize 75% of the "spending problem" is SS, Medicare/Medicaid, defense, and interest on the debt.

So what happens when you mention actually cutting some spending?

Read the comments at the bottom of the page and you can see what's really wrong with this country. Don't raise taxes, don't cut spending, but somehow get the debt under control.

**** the "Tea Party." That's used as an excuse far too often for current Republican behavior in the Congress, as if they don't have operating minds of their own. That these are the Stepford Republicans, pushed willy-nilly by unknown forces causing their actions. What utter nonsense. They are either fully cognizant of what they are doing, or so unintelligent that they have done what George W. Bush also managed to do... become the very living definition of The Peter Principle.

I think my post made it pretty clear that I was on the Obama side with this. I don't see anything my post as excusing the GOP.

Please don't take some prior conservative stance I may have had on some other issue and try to pigeonhole me. There's enough of that on this forum.

I was moreso trying to think of a reason for the GOP intransigence and that face-saving proposal. There is a marked difference between a reason and an excuse. Just because I might think that insane jealousy was the reason OJ killed Nicole does not mean I am excusing him for it.

My post was not aimed directly at you, nor was it meant to imply that you are a "tea Party" supporter, but was rather directed at the constant noise from the media that the "tea party" is pushing the GOP leadership, and the congressional delegation in general, towards their (the "tea party") agenda, with them (the GOP leadership and rank and file) seemingly helpless to make up their own minds and take a stand at odds with this absurd mish-mash of political neophytes that are being used by the radical elements of the Republican Party for their own ends. My error was not stating straight off that my post wasn't aimed at you. My bad.

With so many props, Batman should work for Boeing!

    No problemo.

one thing i don't get is if they have "proven" that the stimulus did nothing, how do they know that a tax increase will shatter the economy?

I'm usually against tax hikes but we are in a special situation. Also a 36 to 40 percent hike on the top 1 percent could hardly be considered plunging the country into "socialism". I really don't think that gets into Laffer curve territory. It certainly didn't cause capital to flow out of the country in the 90's (albeit that money was invested in the tech bubble but that's completely irrelevant).
