The fact is that the American people did not like the healthcare bill because they didn't know what was in it. Now what political party could have been responsible for that? The one that has a 24-hour news network to spread it's fear mongering propaganda, perhaps?

When polled, the majority of Americans liked almost every single part of the bill. They were just largely uninformed about what was in it.

The Democrats don't have a 24-hour news network? MSNBC, CNN? It is not like the popularity of the bill is increasing as time goes by and people find out what's in it. People know what's in the bill they just hate it.

    link?

I would have thought the bankruptcy reform act would have been just such a bill, but there was too much money flying around for the Dems to vote against it.

Fivethirtyeight used to have a good piece on this, but I can't find it now that it's switched over to a new format.

This is the best I can find, from this February right around the time the bill was passed:

As you can see, most of the major components are actually popular. This doesn't include the fact that the public option actually polled well for quite a while, too.

That's the most bogus poll I have every seen. Did they really ask people "Do you support $132 billion in deficit reduction"? or how about "Do you support closing the donut hole"? I can't believe the low numbers they got. 55% would like to reduce the deficit by $132 billion; what the hell are the other 45% thinking?

I see that you feel no need to address the fact that 70+% were in favor of the employer mandate, 50+% were in favor of the individual mandate, 80% were in favor of ending pre-existing condition discrimination, etc.

Why do I even bother with you?

What's funny is that this is making such news, even though the Bush tax cut extension is ENORMOUSLY more important.

If Obama let's that extension through, he has lost my vote for good (he's pretty much already lost it, but this would really tick me off).

The health care bill is/was terrible. It helps the insurance companies more than citizens. I am surprised if it wasn't authored by the insurance lobby. We should have had a single payer system. Medicare seems to be working well. It has low costs of administration and covers a ton of at risk patients.

Thats because I believe this poll was done by a 5 year old and thus inaccurate. How you ask a question matters in polling.

I only meant the tax cuts for the rich. I think his plan to extend the cuts for the middle class is understandable, given the economic circumstances.

Yeah, yeah. I've been through this before many times both with you and with ATW (in every thread about Islam). Your definition of "bad poll" or "bad argument" is going to be whatever doesn't agree with the conclusion you've already reached without any facts whatsoever.

First off could you link where you got this poll from so I can see the polling data. Second a good poll would never use the term "health discrimination". They would ask "Do you believe a private insurer has the right to deny their services based on a customer's current health?". "Discrimination" is word worth a incredibly negative connotation. No respectable polling firm would make such mistakes.

The graphic was posted in this article.

I'm not sure what the wording of the actual poll was. Frankly, I don't want to waste the time looking it up because you'll just come up with another reason to ignore this poll (it's from a biased pollster, bad sampling, they polled people on Wednesday...).

I've found a couple other things from fivethirtyeight now. For example, Americans like Obamacare, unless they're old. And here's the one I mentioned in my previous post also showing that most items in the bill poll favorably.

I agree with this post, and apparently the insurance lobby did in fact write whole segments of the bill.

But you know exactly why we didn't go to single payer and exactly why we didn't get better legislation through.
