Very well put and expresses why I have doubts about Obama. I think many of Obama's supporters will be dissapointed by what his presidency will be like as he has promised a change in many things that ultimately I don't think he can deliver on, to be fair I don't think any candidate can ever live up to their campaign, but I think this is something that will be acute particulary for Obama. Its likely that Obama will end up with a foreign policy something more like GH Bush, focussed strongly on consensus building, but its also likely that that foreign policy might also end up being dogged by the problems that Bill Clinton faced in what to do when you can't build up consensus. IF Obama takes a hawkish route which he sometimes hints at he might suffer from being looked at as being trigger happy but at the same time if he dawdles like Clinton did for a long time over Rawanda and Bosnia he will be considered weak.

Why are the US and Israel allies anymore? There's no need for protection. Even so, what does the US gain from being allies with Israel?

That's a complicated question, and an interesting one, but I'm not sure why you're directing it at me. Please note that I never claimed support for Israel was a good or bad policy, only that it was a necessary position for anyone in America with political ambitions.

Not exactly directed at you, I guess it just struck me when I was reading your post so I hit the "quote" button.

Why's it so important though? Why's it important at all actually?
