HOLY CRAP! rt dot com??? How did I miss this??? Even though the second sentence says "Though this had been the president’s plan since he first campaigned for office...". I had no idea about this top secret deal that didn't go through. Keep bringing those hard hitting, fact filled articles that are in no way conjecture or opinion Orange, you're doing Gods work.

There is a reason why President Clinton enacted it in the first place. I believe it was after seeking counsel from the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the generals in his counsel.

If you cannot see a likely scenario where a group of 18 to 20 year old guys in basic training would beat up on the gay guy, I just don't know what to tell you. I never said the discrimination and danger would come from the establishment or up the chain of command. I am more concerned about the rank and file. We are not way past that with 18 to 20 year old kids, you are ignoring the gay bashing and bullying that occur in this country.

    2. Signed the Ledbetter Fair Pay act to help ensure equal pay for women

    3. Gave the Department of Veterans Affairs with over $1.4 billion to help improve services for America's Veterans

Honorable Mention (since it was halted by congress.) Signed an executive order to close Guantanamo Bay

Even if that was the whole story it doesn't offset the tax break that Obama's health care act gives to 29,000,000 Americans in order to afford health insurance.

The scoreboard reads 29 mil to 6 mil. Your team is the losing one.

I know a guy who is an officer in the US army, based in Europe. He is very openly gay (without it being obvious by mannerisms or something) in his non-military life, but he would never dream of letting anyone in the army know about it.

Again its been a while since DADT was repealed. Has there been a sliver of evidence that gays are now suffering from systemic discrimination and bullying in the military?

Good argument against integrating the forces, too, right?

It's still a personal decision for them whether they come out or not. My assumption is that most don't, so nothing would change for them.

    1. he protected people with pre-existing conditions, like me (who have ALWAYS PAID for health insurance).

    2. Osama bin Laden was brought to justice

    3. he ended the Iraq war (and saying it was ending anyway is a joke. McCain wants us to still be there.)

    4. ended Don't Ask Don't Tell

    5. he came out in support of equal rights

    6. he saved the auto industry

    7. he expanded stem cell research

    8. he made the GOP look absolutely r****ded to the point that it seems like the GOP might implode after this next election.

Obama is the most accomplished president since LBJ and he's only had one term. It's impossible to list only three accomplishments but I'll list the ones I regard to be his top three. And I don't even have room to list ending the war in Iraq or his outstanding record on gay rights, the best ever for an American president.

    1. Averting a second Great Depression and saving the auto industry.
    2. Doing away with insurance company discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions; ending lifetime caps on coverage; ensuring that insurance companies will spend 80% of premiums on actual care or send back the difference; and insuring an additional 30 million Americans.
    3. Got Bin Laden. Bush "wasn't that concerned" about him. Romney said he "wouldn't move heaven and earth" to get him. Obama was that concerned about America's greatest enemy and from day one he made it the number one priority of his military and intelligence agencies. He did move heaven and earth. And, taking a high-risk gamble, one that Republican Defense Secretary Richard Cohen called the boldest decision he has ever seen a president make, he got the bad guy and avenged the deaths of 3,000 of our countrymen killed on American soil.

You're over the hill. Clinton and his Joint Chiefs did that 20 YEARS AGO.

You don't stop bullying and discrimination by telling people to hide who they are. You plant a flag and say this is unacceptable. And over time it becomes so. (There was a time too that neither women nor blacks were allowed to serve and the same arguments were made.) There have been virtually no reports of your worry in this instance being a problem. At a time when military suicides are at an all-time high, people killing themselves because they are ashamed over their sexuality doesn't happen in the military anymore. Thanks to Barak Obama.

And end to discrimination has to start somewhere. Obama will be to LGBT civil rights as LBJ was to civil rights for blacks.

And discrimination didn't end over night. People fought it hard. But where are we now? Somebody had to have the guts to get this started.

Thanks be to President Obama for being that somebody.

As a personal aside, I honestly can't believe you oppose the ending of DADT in this day and age, especially on the grounds that it's "for their own good." I'm disappointed in you.

Here is a detailed explanation of how the Recovery Act and other "stimulus" bills helped America: http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2012/08/13/think_again_obamas_new_deal?page=0,0

    A selection from the article:

    1-Saved capitalism from itself.
2-Somehow still gets called a socialist for it.
3-Burdened his socialist credentials by killing half of Al-Qaeda, saving the auto industry, negotiating with Russians over START and resetting the fact that the Bush Admin nearly went to war with the Ruskies, ended the war on science by lifting restrictions on federal funding for new embryonic stem cell lines (thereafter upheld by two federal appeals courts), repealing DADT (and appointing the two progressive justices necessary to strike down DOMA), signing the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010, which expanded Pell grants and saved about $68 billion through the government directly lending to students rather than going through private banks, and one of the only ones who might have been flawed in his approach to Wall Street reform, but still attempted something in Dodd-Frank.
