NASA is going to the moon because that is the only mission the hardware they made supports. It is a pointless mission. SpaceX is doing it because it will stretch their hardware to the limits and if successful will be an insanely bold mission. No way in hell they pull it off in only a few years but if NASA had their balls there would be people on Mars right now.
