Both phrases are cliches that have been used in the past. But words can take on more than one meaning. I think the primary idea he was conveying was that McCain/Palin pretend to be something they're not -- an agent of change. But it would be naive to think that he (or his speechwriters) didn't choose those particular phrases as an added dig against Palin (for her "lipstick" line) and McCain (for his age). At the least, I would hope Obama wasn't so clueless to not recognize that connection.

Does he have anything to apologize for? If he wanted to be completely civil, an apology would be nice. But these types of things are nothing new in a political race. The Republican campaign has resorted to more explicit personal attacks, and they've apologized for none of it.

So it's settled then. Any attacks on Palin, on her record or otherwise is sexist, while any attack on Obama is racist. Gotcha.

Here is the thing. Obama used the double standard when he needed it and now the double standard that females get is burning him.

I hate all double standards but they are not going anywhere.

of course it got more reaction, because Palin used a lipstick line that got reaction. maybe obama should have stayed clear, because when you take it out of context, sure it can seem like he's calling her a pig, but anyone who has heard this lipstick/pig line before knows what he meant

I mean seriously, why would any politician just come out and call another a pig, especially a woman

See, I think McCain and Palin are being ultra negative, and lying their asses off.....so I actually wish Obama would get a little dirty too.

It really makes no sense to me, but the meaning was obvious to me with the old fish and lipsticked pig.

I think he should fire the speech writer.

it's an expression, people. just because Palin wears lipstick doesn't make the comment directed at her. if McCain says the same thing about Hillary, would people be freaking out?

    desperate much?

[QUOTE-Dick Cheney]As we like to say in Wyoming, you can put all the lipstick you want on a pig, but at the end of the day it's still a pig. (Applause.)
That's one of my favorite lines. (Laughter.) You want to hear it again?
    AUDIENCE: Yes!
THE VICE PRESIDENT: As we say in Wyoming -- (laughter) -- you can put all the lipstick you want on a pig, but at the end of the day it's still a pig. (Applause.) This is a great crowd. (Applause.) All right.
    AUDIENCE: Cheney! Cheney! Cheney! (Applause.)[/QUOTE]

Crying about the Media now! WAHHHHH!!!

    http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0908/Obama_knocks_press_on_madeup_controversy.html

Obama knocks press on 'made-up controversy'

Speaking at a high school in Norfolk, Obama took a few moments to address what he calls "the made-up controversy" of the day, Amie Parnes reports.

Obama said the McCain campaign moved to "seize an innocent remark and take it out of context because they knew it's catnip for the news media."

"See, it would be funny, but the news media decided that would be the lead story yesterday. This happens every election cycle. Every four years, this is what we do. This is what they want to spend two of the last 55 days talking about...Enough!" he said.

Obama called the attacks "lies, outrage and swift boat politics."

"These are serious times and they call for a serious debate...spare me all the phony outrage. Spare me all the phony talk about change," he said.

What's the old saying? Something along the lines of...

"If you don't vote, you don't have the right to b****."

This isn't even about being a Republican or Democrat. People KNEW exactly what he was talking about. The crowd at his event knew, the media knew, and the American People knew. For a guy that promotes CHANGE...he was the one that stooped down to the same old politics. That's fine. That's part of the Political landscape. We expect our candidates to get down and get dirty. Don't sit here and tell us you didn't mean it when you KNEW what the repercussions were going to be. Obama's speech writer should be FIRED for even bringing the Pig and Old Fish comment. BAD MOVE! The backlash will be felt and this won't go away for another 24 hours. That's just how it goes.

    I fixed that for you.

Obama's response was spot on: apparently the GOP wants to keep creating "catnip for the media." That is a perfect analogy, and he called the media... (gasp)... CATS! aka... never mind.

across110thstreet, nice find. Anyone have any problem with Dick Cheney's remarks on Kerry? Of course not.

once people start getting fired for being sexist then the PC police will come.

Females have a much worse history in this world than do any race, and obviously on a larger scale.
