Someone has to preside over the bureaucracy that will regulate the Internet.

Big, fat, huge f***cking NO to Gates as CTO. I will be so pissed if this happens.

Has anyone done more to hurt innovation in the computer industry than Gates/Microsoft?

Is anyone else bothered by the idea of adding yet another cabinet level office? Could this CTO office be handled under an existing office?

    I like bill gates.
And if obama can get a spot in those jerry seinfeld commercials, that would be great.

Lessig for the win. No one else understands the potential for the internet like he does. And no one else on that list comes close to understanding the LEGAL framework necessary to make that vision possible.

And it's LAWRENCE LESSIG. Wtf? Larry?

Agree. Absolutely no to Gore or Gates. Blech.

Lessig is possibly the smartest on that list, but it depends on exactly what you want the CTO to do. I'm not exactly sure that Lessig is the right guy to promote internet commence, for instance, but in terms of knowing what it can do, in terms of creating digital IP, and in terms of knowing what this country and government need for computer infrastructure, he'd be great.

W is kicking himself right now thinking he could have created this position in order to more efficiently spy on people.

The only thing that can come out of this is another bloated bureaucracy looking to put red tape on our technological advances from now on. That and also government subsidizing Silicon Valley in the spirit of DOA and the farmers of the great Midwest.

Right because our technology infrastructure is sooo awesome right now. Our decentralized bureaucracy is part of the problem. The federal government allocated states millions of dollars to lay down fiber optic lines to upgrade our broadband infrastructure. Guess how much got put down. Basically none of it. We lag behind much of the developed world in broadband infrastructure. Our ability to keep up with new technology for our electrical grid, broadband network, wireless communications etc... We are lagging behind the same socialist, bureaucratic governments that we like to criticize day in and day out.

This isnt a call for bureaucracy (that already exists in large quantities when it comes to tech), its a call for some leadership and a single entity who's job is to figure out what we're doing with the money we allocate and how to use it. We spend billions every year on technology but we're extremely inefficient about it and most of the time have no clue where the money is going to.

My hope is that the Obama administration ushers in a new wave of oversight over many parts of government. It's a key ingredient that has been severely lacking and it needs to happen.
