Being President these days is almost an impossible task. Will we have a President in the next 20-30 years that will universally be hailed after his term is done as a great President? I doubt it. Too much divisiveness and bitterness on both sides.

I only say that because, short of a lack of courtroom experience, this pick seems to have all the necessary and quality credentials needed to be nominated. Yet, the choice is being questioned because this woman actually went to an Ivy League school? As a biased Ivy Leaguer...um, seriously?

All that said, I don't really understand why a Supreme Court position has no term limits? Regardless of what I said above, there is always need for caution. Who knows how Kagan will turn out? But at just 50 years old, heck she could have 40 more years as a Justice...which seems ridiculous to me.

America has a huge middle class. While I understand and concede on a macro basis your overall point, in this particular case Kagan is being appointed by someone in an even higher position of power who seems to have broken your stereotype.

Obama is a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he was the president of the Harvard Law Review.

He too is IVY. IVY appointing IVY?

You do know that you don't have to summer at Newport to go to Yale or Harvard anymore, right?

On another note, I would't mind seeing a Stanford/Chicago grad for a change, but that's hardly slumming it.

True Enough. But once you go there. . . summers at Newport may become the norm ;)

Once you on the other side of the glass ceiling . . . . .

Maybe it's just that the jobs that she's had requires it, but she seems to be a big fan of governmental power in general, and executive power in particular. A kindler, gentler John Yoo, it seems. Here's an article from when she was appointed as Soliciter-General: http://www.boston.com/news/nation/a...harvard_law_school_dean_as_solicitor_general/

To me, with admittedly little evidence, instead of appointing a liberal opposite to Scalia, Obama has appointed an opposite to Kennedy.

appointed to seduce kennedy, she may be more likely to seduce sottomayor or ginsburg.

Obama seems to know her on friendly terms. If that's the case, I wonder what he's thinking in his choices.

This should be the biggest red flag, not her sexual preference. GS is taking over everything lol.

I read that statement as: There is no [current] federal constitutional right to same-sex marriage.

Hard to judge her based on solicitor general work, since in that capacity she is basically representing a client (the US government).

well you do want diversity and I agree with Basso here. If all the judges come from the same background and have the same views they would never debate on anything and just agree. Also just because you came out of a Ivy League does not make you smart. There are a lot of people with connections that in because they know someone.

One of my best friends was a machinist at Hughes Tool for 7 years, had reached a dead end, quit and decided to go to UT, where he got his degree in 3 years, applied to Harvard (my wife helped him with his application... it was insane! Kept trying to get him to tone it down, but he turned out to be right) and got an MBA. My friend must have fit their "white, working class, "over achieving" Texan" slot. Go figure. He makes his living, in the main, doing IPO's, working out of his apartment, mostly, although he travels around the world. So yes, you don't have to be Ivy League to get an Ivy League degree.
