Is this what republcians have been reduced to? Attacking Obama for trying to embrace Abe Lincoln as an inspiration?

I hope Republicans put together a stronger opposition platform or it's going to be a long period of Democratic dominance.

Bush got close to Truman, but not quite there. 28% Approval > 22%.

Although I think most historians would estimate Lincoln's to be much lower at times.

doubtful unless you are talking only about the white house.

There is little doubt in my mind Bama will hold for 2 terms but I doubt the Democrats hold the congress after the next elections.

If republicans don't develop a platform that has appeal beyond the religious right they are in trouble.

They still have the hate the immigrant card if Mexico pops like a bad zit and China starts "decoupling" from Wall Street's clusterfrack.

I am just surprised that after looking at some of these threads since the election, Repubs on this board are still coming up with the sarcastic "New kind of politics" threads, complaining about expensive inauguartions, and "the messiah" acting like Abe.

Ok....what on earth???? Should these guys be talking about what republicans should do to make things better? Or what policies of Obama should be changed?

Where's the discussion of the bailout package, the stimulous plan, or Obama's picks for cabinet posts????

We're talking about Obama imitating Lincoln like that's a bad thing????

C'mon Bigtexx et al! You guys need to step up to the plate here - you're in the opposition. Have you forgotten how to actually critique policies after 8 years of defending Bush's?

I'll take that bet. The Dems already have a majority beyond what the Repubs have had at any time since Gingrich was named Speaker, the Repubs have a slew of retirements set up for the next 2 years, the Repubs have no significant bench, and Dems will get to run the redistricting process in the majority of states after the 2010 census.

Plus, thanks to Bush and all those who would put ideology over actual governing, the majority of Americans can't stand Republicans.

Any post that is premised on a video of Sean Hannity is doomed to failure. Hannity is funny, but that's about it. The guy is an entertainer. His job is to get people to watch, even if it is only to see what tripe he will spout off next.

It would be like a liberal posting a video of Jon Stewart and passing it off a legitimate political analysis.

The way I see it is that barring something really bad happening like the economy going into a real depression and a bigger botched response than Katrina to a major disaster the Republicans best hope for recapturing the House, Senate seems tougher, is for them to return to being a party of small government and take on the mantle of civil liberties.

Obama is going to increase government spending and has strongly supported the bailouts. Since he voted for the revised FISA bill is showing that he probably isn't going to make a lot of changes to many of the Bush Admin's policies on fighting terrorism. Its also questionable how much he is going to give up on the expanded powers of the Executive that Cheney et al. pushed for. If the Republicans can successfully convince voters that they are again the party of small government in both spending and in power then they can successfully compete beyond just pushing social issues.

While the Republicans maybe hamstrung that the Bush Admin. were the ones who both grew government, spent like drunken sailors, and kicked dirt on civil liberties two years is a long time and the electorate has a short memory.

I think he would have preferred tracking polls to draft riots.

    Sean Hannity is a moron.

Lincoln was not a republican unless you still think Strong Thruman died a Democrat.

Lincoln LEFT the republican party. He was last elected as a member of the National Union Party.

I know, right? So much forgotten/unstudied history. Have you read Paradise Alley about the New York riots?
