Yeah, he has a strong legal backing from court precedents and it's not like similar executive orders to this extent hasn't been done before.

There's no excuse for failure if Obama really wanted this to go through.

Ummm, no "stifling debate" was the reason that they gave for filibustering.

So what does he do now that this has failed in the Senate? Issue the executive order regardless, or has he painted himself into a corner? Make speeches expressing "anger and remorse" and nothing more? The President should have issued the executive order long ago and then fought for Congressional passage. I've never understood why he didn't. That would have been leadership.

That should make you very happy, basso. You have a long track record on here of supporting candidates who are anti-gay rights.

**** the Democrats in this case, really, and **** politicians in general.

This is what drives me mad about politics. OK, the Democrats suggest a repeal of DADT. That's great! Finally! Why add a bunch of amendments (even just 1) to it that you know the Republicans will not like? Things that have nothing to do with the repeal of DADT?

Obviously it's a political move. By adding amendments the Republicans won't like, one of two things will happen: (1) Republicans agree to pass the bill thus allowing the Democratic agenda to progress, or (2) Republicans block the bill, allowing Democrats to say "SEE! Republicans don't want to repeal DADT!".

This disgusts me. If you really wanted to repeal DADT, ask for the repeal and ONLY the repeal... not this additional BS.

The current political structure is absolutely broken and we need a new party that is more concerned with what's best for the people not with what's best for their job security. Unfortunately, contrary to what they say, the TEA Party is no such voice.

Report came out, Mullen and Gates both approved this change.....even McCain's wife threw her support for it (before John smacked her around and forced a rebuttal). Why the hell is McCain still fighting this? Does he really stance is going to make him look more favorable to people?

He supported the survey we had to take. He supported the results as recently as September. Now he said it was flawed (How does asking us troops directly make it flawed?) and is stepping over the line by challenging Obama, Gates and Adm. Mullen.

Does anyone have a clue what his angle is? Cause I am in the Military and we (myself and co-workers) are so lost to why this is an issue......

I'd argue it a combination of his bigotry and another instance in his long history of misjudging the effects of his actions.

FWIW, Mullen b****slapped McCain yesterday when McCain took issue with the study he requested and tried to act like his "experience" trumped all:

I would also speculate that McCain never thought in a million years that the study would come out in support of repeal.

It’s not your grandfather’s military anymore

I really wish he didn't, I honor any soldier who's served and is going to serve but there are some serious issues that are gonna come from this. A close friend of mine is in the marines and is corporal, having some marines under him he sees enough social issues such as those from gf's and wives. On top of this you have gangs formed on bases and top of this you want another issue to deal with? Its better ignored, not for the convenience but the possible conflict it comes from. It really doesn't matter if people knew or didnt knew.

In a strange parody of the wikileaks cables regarding arab leaders' feelings towards Iran, the top Army and Marine chiefs remain against repeal of DADT despite the survey findings that indicate the vast majority of their troops are ok with it.

You know, I’ve been thinking about this and I have another theory as to why grandpa is having a conniption over DADT. The reason that he is so opposed to it is that if he (or republicans in general) acknowledge that DADT is bad policy then the whole house of cards against gays come crumbling down. They will have to admit other stances they’ve held against gays are out moded and wrong. They would have to acknowledge that if gays can serve in the military, then they can have equal rights in marriage and other aspects of life. It would completely destroy any rational they have about gays and their existence.

DADT is the firewall for their bigotry
