I've always degreed with much of the fiscal and government intervention policies of Obama, though I thought he'd be refreshing in how he'd handle our international policy. WRONG. Obama is alleged to be willing to give Israel bunker busters and other weapons to attack Iran ONLY if they wait till next year after the election to use them. What a crock. Why do we want US weapons killing people in other countries creating a new generation of Osama Bin Laden's that hate the US. A politician is a politician is a politician.

    http://news.yahoo.com/israel-asks-u-arms-could-aid-iran-strike-091024021.html

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel has asked the United States for advanced "bunker-buster" bombs and refueling planes that could improve its ability to attack Iran's underground nuclear sites, an Israeli official said on Thursday.

"Such a request was made" around the time of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Washington this week, the official said, confirming media reports.

But the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity given the sensitivity of the issue, played down as "unrealistic" reports that the United States would condition supplying the hardware on Israel promising not to attack Iran this year.

Netanyahu told Obama at a White House meeting on Monday that Israel had not yet decided on military action against Iran, sources close to the talks said.

Netanyahu has hinted that Israel could resort to force should Tehran - which denies suspicions that it is covertly trying to develop atomic bombs - continue to defy big powers' diplomatic pressure to curb its nuclear program.

The risk of an Israeli-Iranian war troubles President Barack Obama, who is up for re-election in November and has cautioned against kindling more Middle East upheaval. A Gulf conflict could send oil prices rocketing upwards.

A front-page article in the Israeli newspaper Ma'ariv on Thursday said Obama had told Netanyahu that Washington would supply Israel with upgraded military equipment in return for assurances that there would be no attack on Iran in 2012.

Israel is widely assumed to have the Middle East's only nuclear arsenal but its conventional firepower may not be enough to deliver lasting damage to Iran's distant, dispersed and well-fortified facilities, many experts say.

Israel has limited stocks of older, smaller bunker-busters and a small fleet of refueling planes, all supplied by Washington.

Western powers suspect Iran's uranium enrichment program is aimed at stockpiling fissile material for nuclear weapons. Iran says it is strictly for civilian energy uses.

I was just thinking earlier today how I wish our presidents and those running for president wouldn't have to kowtow to Israel.

This article has no substance to it. Even the part you quoted:

Ok, so Obama said that the U.S. would give upgraded military equipment under the assurance that Israel would not attack Iran in 2012. Notice how the author does not say what this equipment is or even if the deal was accepted.

An Israeli paper quotes as Israeli official that Israel had asked the United States for refueling planes and advanced bombs. That's great. Israel can ask whatever it wants, and the Israeli newspaper can tell Israeli newspapers whatever it wants. Doesn't mean the deal went through or that the deal involved these items. Or that even a pending deal would involve these items.

Check your title "Obama gives weapons to Israel...just don't use till i'm re-elected!"

Let's just say for the sake of argument that Obama did strike some type of military aid deal with Israel so that it would not attack Iran during our election period. What's the problem with that? I guess if you are pro-Israel attacking Iran you'd be against that deal. Israel is currently trying to leverage our own electoral politics against us so we support their attack or go ahead and attack Iran ourselves. This is not in our interests. If Obama believed that Israel would attack Iran tomorrow if we didn't give them some type of military aid, I'd much rather him give something small and have them have them hold off till the next president is in office so as to give the maximum amount of time to negotiate a peaceful result.

That article is a joke. So Israel asks for weapons... No confirmation that we gave the weapons ... Then a source unnamed is in an Israeli paper saying that Obama said don't use them until 2012... This goes beyond hearsay... You can do better. Obama has done many questionable things, you don't need something heard fourth hand.

Actually, this is smart, IMHO, and I don't think the OP is far off on the thread title.

Netanyahu has been hammering the drums for war for some time, despite warnings from plenty of top military brass and a lukewarm response in public polls. But war always helps Israeli PMs in power. No matter how unpopular a war, dissent gets quiet fast in order to "support the troops" who are conscripted and someone likely related to you.

The gas masks are being distributed and Bibi is doing his best to scare the crap out of the electorate and his amen corner in the US. Yes, Iran is an existential threat to Israel, but so is North Korea to Japan and South Korea, and Pakistan to India and they already HAVE nukes.

There are plenty of strong arguments about why it would be incredibly stupid to attack Iran, but the least repeated is that it would only strengthen a weakening regime and draw Iran's opposition against the West.

Bribing Bibi to wait out sanctions is smart politics. For one, it averts a major disaster the world doesn't need and buys time. Second, Bibi gets to look like he's doing something. It's a fair compromise for two politicians that both hate each other but want to be re-elected.

Still, Bibi is very involved in trying to get American voters to unseat Obama because Obama threatens HIS ability to stay elected. And start wars of choice. And expand settlements. I look to him to make some choice appearances and make remarks to paint Obama as unfair to Israel or weak on Iran or some such nonsense. He is campaigning just as much for himself as he his for whomever wins the GOP nomination (well maybe not Ron Paul).

An Obama re-election will mean Obama will be able to politically afford to say no more often and more forcefully to Israel. Unless you believe Israel should have a carte blanc entitlement to annex it's neighbors and escalate tensions with everyone, this is a good thing.
