I'll add that we really don't know any facts. This is a story told by Jennings to make a point about growing up gay. It could have happened just as he told it, it could be an amalgamation of a number of his experiences, it could be an apocryphal tale, or he it could be based on real events but changed enough to protect the identity of the kid from ever being known.

this is the hilarious thing, he didn't have to say anything. he's trying to better a situation for a lot of young people. but basso doesn't care about young gay people

i just want to know how old this "older adult" was, 18? 45? it's incredibly relevant, if this is true, and he did not report a relationship with a man who was significantly older than he, than most definetely i see a problem with it, but if he was just a few years older, in the same school perhaps, than no, i don't see the problem

he met him in a bus station rest room, 45 minutes away, so unlikely to be a peer from school.

When this happened, he was a 24 YO closeted teacher himself not any kind of spokesperson. Had this been a young girl instead of "Brewster" don't you think you would be stringing him up for his personal irresponsibility and ridiculing his privacy over safety choice?

It strikes me as more of a foolish choice made by a young teacher at the time, but it bothers me that he still uses a very complex and dangerous situation to promote his agenda now.

~"I was a 24 YO schoolteacher" is lifted from the audio posted. It's not "conjecture..." :D

Still uses? Yeah, I'd say so when he selectively tells/uses the story in front of what he knows to be a sympathetic audience. In general, he seems to have stopped commenting on it... probably due to political ambition.

The speech was given 9 years ago... in 2000. The event took place some time before that... when Jennings was 24 YO-- not sure of his age.

So, I guess what we're all saying here is that Jennings will be unable to effectively advise the president on education because he might have not reported a statutory rape that might have happened 15 years ago. Yeah, that would be deplorable, but he's not going to push an agenda that tells teachers not to report that sort of thing, and he has tons of experience and accolades in education that make him a fine advisor on the subject. One blemish should not negate all of his work.

To add to that, we can look at the accusation step-by-step:

    • Did a kid actually tell him an older man had sex with him? Well, the editorial writer says he did, but rimrocker posted the actual/full quote from Jennings and it's clear that were was no indication nor admission from him that this student mentioned it was someone 18 or older. Thus, there is no proof that a student confided in Jennings about having sex with someone that is 18 and older.
    • Was there a statutory rape? First, we don't know the student's name. Second, there is no indictment/suspect/police report of it. My guess is no, there wasn't any.

Perhaps you should spend your time actually thinking about real life issues instead of wallowing in your fantastical world where Democratic advisors have some blemish on their record that you think would totally negate everything intellectual they can offer.

I'm beginning to realize that is asking way too much of way too many people, however. I am beginning to lose faith in my own country.

Had this been a young girl who drove 45 minutes out of her way to have a lesbian tryst, I would suggest he handle it the same way. It is not his place to out a teenager and in the process create a media circus around that teenager.

So you acknowledge that the source is biased?

Let me ask you a related question. Do you recognize that this piece is an editorial piece and not a news piece?

That is the critical point. We don't know the facts and this could very well be apocryphal.

Even if it isn't there are still a few key points that we need to consider. First is when the boy says "older" we don't know how much older. Second as other posters have noted we need to consider to what end Jennings actions will take. Without knowing who this boy had sex with turning the boy in only ends up punishing the boy and not the older man.

I will say that if the facts of this case are as reported and that I think Jennings showed some poor judgement. At the minimum he should've strongly discouraged this boy from not having anonymous sex with strangers. He probably could've tried to get the boy to reveal who he had sex with. To take this story from the other side if Jennings had known who the person who had sex with this boy was and that he was in fact an adult I would say that he would definately be obligated to turn that man in.

While I think Jennings could've exercised better jugement there is a difference between turning in the victim (presuming the man this boy had sex with really was a much older adult) and the perpetrator.

the reason this editorial doesn't take these issues into consideration because it wants you to know that Jennings is gay and he has sympathy for gay boys who may be engaging in gay sex.

that's the point of the editorial, I almost feel sorry for the basso that he has to resort to posting stuff like this in his hate for the obama when he claims to care so much about the gay community. this editorial is subtly anti gay.

can't have those queers in the white house

Exactly which is why I asked Basso how does he reconcile his Pro-Gay stance with an editorial that is clearly anti-Gay.

You make it seem like the prime intent of all this would be to "out" somebody when it is not, so you make it seem as if doing the right thing in the larger scheme safety-wise is something nefarious. In these type of situations, identities are protected, so you've set up a straw man.

As a teacher at that school, his responsibility is the safety of those students. Focusing on a lack of condom use as the epitome of poor choice when a lonely 15 YO cruises a bus station 45 minutes from home in another city for anonymous sex is not the apex of good sense. And of course it was not just a BJ in the bathroom; he went to a stranger's house-- seemingly an adult. What would Chris Hanson do?

    BINGO!

    You'll note the references to:

encouraging and covering up man-boy sex
extreme radical statements promoting homosexuality in schools
    contempt for religion

This man is GAY and he's encouraging and promoting that homo life to your kids!

You'll note no mention that this incident happened in 1989. 20 years ago when the whole AIDS thing was hitting the news, and gay jokes were all the rage. What does gay stand for? Got AIDS Yet!! BWAHAHAHAHAHA! Ya, outing an insecure kid would have been supercool back then. Awesome.

You'll note no consideration that the age of consent was 16 (kid was 15), and that it was an anonymous incident initiated by the kid - just who would you be protecting him from? No relationship to break up. No big bad older guy keeping the kid in an abusive or exploitive relationship here. Only one guy getting outed.

But you know all that, basso. Because you're sensitive and supportive of gay rights. It's important to you.

So why do you choose such strange bedfellows?

I finally started wondering if the joke was on us in the case of Trader_Jorge

I'm starting to wonder this about basso, he absolutely cannot be serious

why does it matter? i've been scrupulous in avoiding the gay bashing in the editorial (which is not that subtle), and just stuck to the facts (or allegations). the gay angle has nothing to do with the issue at hand.
