See, I don't know these things. Thanks.

Yes, it's not what the article says, and as I mentioned, the implication is a bit of a stretch. That said, I don't see the harm in trying to rationalize where basso is coming from, which was what I was attempting to do.

I'm having trouble coming up with words to respond to this... perhaps it's because I'm attempting to rationalize a basso point of view.

Regardless, what does the black voters' partisan decision-making have to do with anything? If you remove partisanship, are they not still able to vote for their candidate? They are. I guess they are simply assuming that the white voters moving from the black Democratic candidate to some other white candidate would be a large enough flow to turn the tide away from the black voters' "candidate of choice."

I suppose this assumption is what I have exception with, especially considering the demographic of the city and because I don't feel that the DOJ's argument is valid, I can actually see basso's implication as being possible reasoning for the DOJ's decision (but, again, a stretch).

Maybe I'm giving the voters there too much credit as far as what they use in determining their candidate. I live in an ideal world where I hope black people vote for white candidates if they agree with them, and white people vote for black candidates if they agree with them. I suppose the DOJ knows better than I do (and I'm not saying that sarcastically).

This is exactly the rationale behind the decision. I agree that it's pretty questionable.
