Gates: Iraq outcome 'will always be clouded by how it began'

"The problem with this war for, I think, many Americans is that the premise on which we justified going to war proved not to be valid, that is Saddam having weapons of mass destruction," Defense Secretary Robert Gates told reporters as he hopped from one stripped-down U.S. military base to another greeting American troops.

"So when you start from that standpoint, then figuring out in retrospect how you deal with the war — even if the outcome is a good one from the standpoint of the United States — it will always be clouded by how it began."

Talking about spin. Yeah, well, Bush lied; troops died. It is a ****ing disgrace, but oh well that can't be possible bc we are American the Good.

I guess I can see how Obama thinks it is good to play along somehow like it was not all that bad at this time. Maybe a few less troops will get ptsd if you can rationalize it a bit instead of dwelling on all the Iraqis they wasted unenecessarily. Also why rile up the neo-cons and other yahoos any more than they are against Obama and his attempt to correct the Bush mess.

The vast majority of the world and probably even the vast majority of Americans know how Iraq went down.

What a complete unmitigated disaster for the US and Iraq. Bush should be at the Hague.

So should every congress person who voted in favor of this atrocity.

Worse thing I think about this is the untold human rights violations. We have military contractors over there able to do as they please. How many innocent Iraqi civilians have been killed as a result of the money making machine that is our Pentagon and military industrial complex. We are absolutely censored in the real stories of what's happened over there. Out of sight, out of mind.

I watched Matt Damon in The Green Zone yesterday.
That is one badass movie (if a little too much shaky camera).

Greg Kinnear is the sniveling Bushie.

The American troops who joined the fight and provided cover fire for Iraqi soldiers pursuing the attackers were based at the compound to train Iraqi forces,

That's pretty much what they are supposed to do.

I disagree with this. I dislike congress as much as the next guy, but those in congress who voted in favor of this were doing so based on the evidence given to them from the White House. The fact that the evidence was false is not the fault of congress. They believed, as they are supposed to, that the executive branch would do their job with honor and integrity. It really isn't their fault that one entire branch of our government let the country down.

Well after reading a summary I can see why you'd like it. Sounds like typical Hollywood liberal masturbatory fantasy.

But they weren't ignorant: they were told lies. They were uninformed, they were misinformed. Big difference.
