If the route is Dallas to Houston, it will compete with air travel. IAH to downtown will not obviously.

    Lose What?

Again, I'm all for the Space station and all the ways it can be used to improve life on Earth. But manned space travel is a very inefficient and dangerous stunt. But as AI becomes more and more utilitarian it will undoubtedly become the mode of choice for space exploration. You don't have to take food, recycle water, maintain an atmosphere, use heavy protection from radiation or have crews separated from home and family, And, when things go bad, far from home, you don't go through the anguish you would if say, a crew of 3 were irretrievably stuck on Mars.

Nobody is too upset over Spirit the Mars rover being stuck.

That plan is crazy. Why wouldn't you go ahead and connect the Houston train to Austin and the Little Rock train to St. Louis? And the Pittsburgh train to Cleveland.

knowledge. We lost know-how, manpower, people leave the program, and our development was severely set back between the last program and the shuttle. The same thing will happen again. Why take a step back.

There are some things that can only be done with manned space flight. Upkeep on the space station is part of that, other experiments etc. can only be only be done on manned space missions.

8 billion on high Speed light rail
    or
    MORE TOLL ROADS!! WWWHHHHEEEWW

Someone told me Sam Houston toll road paid itself off. . .
then the price of the TOLL WENT UP . . [a 1st for toll roads]
so now it is almost PURE PROFIT [alot of it not staying in Houston]

I hope Mayor Parker will stop some of these companies
making money out of our city
    but
I think she is looking into more of those Camera Ticket thingies
which give me pause on that idea

    I think so.

It would be truly beneficial to all three cities
    and
    the entire state.

The previous segments of the toll have been paid for. They just started construction on a new $300 million NE section, which is just a feeder road right now.

Yeah, it sucks. Insead of Austin, we get connected to New Orleans. Apparently, Houston hasn't met the quota for New Orleans criminals that moved here in 2005.

Well, my nephew works at JSC and I hope he survives this. The President gave out a bunch of bull**** during the campaign when it comes to NASA. Bull****. I'm not going to praise him for "infrastructure," which we need, when he's shafting NASA, which I am a big supporter of, and that has nothing to do with my nephew.

I am a big support of NASA too. I am not happy about the Cut.
    but
the Infrastructure stuff is necessary too

As others have pointed out, there's not a CUT here. 0 new spending... not equal to ... reduced spending. Sorry, but for a shaft, please see the NBA dish forum.

Do you do those things on a plane? Do you always drive from city to city? There is no reason to build a 200 mph train to run relatively short distances.

Why not Texas? Wouldn't you like to get from Houston to Dallas in a few hours without having to go through all of the hastle of airports? A high speed train isn't something that is going to make a lot of stops but an express service on par with catching Southwest Airlines that goes from city to city.

This is how the deficit grows.

It's only one of the ways it grows. But yes I wasn't arguing for or against anything regarding it's effect on the deficit per se. However if we cut manned space flight now, It will cost way more in the future because of what we lose in the interim. That will grow the deficit as well.
