The dream of getting off this rock is impractical at best when you consider the cost, energy budget and time required to actually get anywhere "else". And, I think, it diverts us from the reality of our existence. This planet is a one-in-a-billion convergence of magnetic fields, temperature, oxygen and water. When we ***** it up, that's it, mankind is over.

If the ISS helps us understand and manage this planet then it is money well spent. Money spent on pure science is probably worth it in scientific advancement. I support fusion research, genetic research, alternative energy research. artificial intelligence and robotic research, and unmanned extraterrestrial research, but manned space flight is folly.

I personally like the idea of getting off of this rock at some point but I don't really see the necessity of the US government being the sole or lead agency for doing so.

I'd rather we focused on protecting this rock since, at the moment, it's all we got.

he's right, what are the strategic reasons for pouring money into manned flight, besides swing our big collective you know what.

now before you pound on me, I haven't really read the last few pages of this thread but I'm just saying that's his point all along.

What portion of it do you disagree with? It's pretty commonly accepted (and in fact was explicitly stated at the time by both parties) that the 60's space race between the US and the USSR was very obviously part of the Cold War.

dont mean to bump an old thread, but didnt want to start a new one. i guess since kasich won here in ohio, hes ending the 3C rail project. so dumb, funds were all setup for it. now that money is just going to go to another state thats looking to get a rail system or improve theirs.
