Going to the game Saturday. Figure I'd see Oakland coliseum while I can. Not expecting much of course. I'll basically have visited all the worst mlb stadiums, lol.
We had an old style Ball Park in Orange when I was growing up and there were all types of rumors of barnstorming visitors like Babe Ruth visiting there with rumors he carved his initials somewhere under the stands. Of course it was never even a minor league park, but there was a history left over from the Texas League. Believe it or not, athletes needed to supplement their pro salaries by some means during the off season to make ends meet. It was not a way of becoming rich. It's gone now. Too expensive to maintain and was beginning to rot.
Sounds like not enough palms were greased for them to vote on it just yet. But I'm sure a special session will be called as soon as the correct number of bank accounts have been fortified.
Not only must they be fortified, but they must have the expectation of continued fortification. And like any capitalist, they seek the highest payoff possible whether legal or not since that which is illegal can be purchased via corruption.
It was a pretty boring park, but still better than Tampa (and Wrigley). It had some pretty good beer. It was definitely cool to see the die hard fans still out there tailgating. Feel bad for the fans.
This is not a good precedent The contentious stadium funding package includes up to $380 million in public assistance, with $180 million in transferable tax credits and $120 million in county bonds, which are tax-payer backed loans. The A's would not owe property taxes and a special tax district around the stadium would be carved out. The true cost would be well north of $380 million, as Field of Schemes explains. Also, the funding package is not specific to the Athletics, and could be used for any other major-league franchise -- relocation or expansion -- should the A's be unable to finalize plans to move to Las Vegas. Stick 'em in Nashville or Charlotte.
Like the rendering. Appears to be just off the strip, and will get the green of the mgm to match the A's, so color match, plus the gold of the mandalay, however, still close, and fans would be able to see the strip and skyline. Lookin good.
I was out there last month when the Astros were there. We debated going, but ultimately decided not to. I've been there (a very long time ago) and wanted to spend more time in Santa Cruz instead of driving over an hour each way.
