What??? Getting his numbers playing small ball?? Didn't Yao torch Eddy Curry and ended up with 18 pts by just the 1st half in 18 minutes? Didn't Isiah throw everything at Yao including Cato who used to be one of the defensive stoppers on the Rockets against Shaq?

No, according to the New York Times, Yao got most of his numbers playing against Curry, the "biggest, baddest man in the paint."

What I was pointing out is why Yao doesn't get the recognition as being the best center in the game. Yao will have a good game and then the next he will have 4 reb, 0 block game. He needs to be consistent.

Yao will be as good as Rik Smits, Shawn Bradley, and all the big guys that didn't do much because they were too tall. Yao is too soft has no passion. This is the crap Yao has taken from many critics but in the end Yao will be considered as one of the great big men in the NBA and oh yes he will win NBA championships. You can book it.

Yao's game log for this year:

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3599/gamelog;_ylt=AhaO96skEO3KTnSoRJect6KkvLYF?year=2006

    and last year:

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3599/gamelog;_ylt=A0SO54z.FFZFdkAAzAGkvLYF?year=2005

Those numbers are pretty consistently good, IMO.

Yao's been bringing it consistently for the past year (and I mean literal year, not NBA season year). If you believed most articles written today, you'd think Yao hasn't progressed since his rookie year.

And there are few teams left who DON'T play small ball now. It doesn't matter if it's small ball anyways, that's not an excuse for Yao playing so well. There are advantages and disadvantages for Yao when he faces 'small ball' teams. He was able to overcome those disadvantages.

At this point it's more like 10 good games straight, and then one off game. His worst game out of six this season: 17 pts, 10 rb.

Yea, unfortunately he has to over-prove himself to most people from basic bad stereo-typing alone. Sad really. Just like Rafer will never shake the label of being out of control and the persona he USED to carry in street ball, Yao will always be viewed as a big, goofy, unathletic, passive player to many NBA fans and media UNTIL he wins a couple of championships.

I'll add one more thing to your prediction. If he is able to sustain a long career (12-15 years), unlike any other player of his size, he will go down as one of the top 3 greatest scoring big men to ever play. (Wilt, Kareem, Yao)

Try watching some games today, instead of games from 3 years ago.

See. This is where Yao can NEVER win in many's eyes. If he doesn't put up big numbers, he sucks. But, if he does have a great game, it's because he is supposed to since he is the biggest, tallest player out there.

But, your logic is skewed. You're saying he should automatically get big numbers versus a small lineup or a team playing small ball yet this has been the most proven method used by opponents to take him out of the game. Swarm and run.

You're just proving the point of why he doesn't get the recognition. Not by what you say but demonstrating that your perception of him is so far from reality. This is exactly the reason he doesn't get the recognition that he does because people's impression of him are based on ESPN Sport Center highlights vs. reality.

Where have you been? Have you looked at what he's done since coming back from toe-surgery in late Jan of LAST YEAR? Have you not seen how he's dominated since then? Have you even taken notice of his performance since the all-star break of LAST YEAR?
