Why does NY hate us so much. I mean theyre not making any noise on getting 2.2 million to rebuild a freaking train station. http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050906/ap_on_re_us/attacks_transit_1 Should a train station be costing that much???? Sure they went out a got one of the best arctitect in the world (http://www.calatrava.com) but still. Maybe the Chronicle should look into it. Myabe the chronicle should investigate this further.
I read several articles from the Times in the days after the flooding, and this is the only one that's taken a cynical view of Houston's role. The best article I read, on life inside the Dome, described volunteers efforts as tender and said the Astrodome "radiated security and services." I read the article in question long before this thread was started. As a journalist, the article strikes me as editorializing. As a Houstonian, it just pisses me off. From an outsider's perspective, though, of course in times of such heightened sensitivity any movement towards scooping up the business hemmoraging out of New Orleans is going to be seen as cold-hearted buzzardry. Everyone around the country wants to see nothing but compassion towards the evacuees, and a lot of righteous anger is being directed at anyone who seems to be unsympathetic or even exploitative of them. Of course, practically, we each know that the port of New Orleans is vital to keeping the American machine running and SOMEONE has to pick up the slack, thereby profitting enormously, but that isn't a pleasant thought for the time being. To most of the country, particularly in areas where President Bush is openly despised, Houston is largely associated with Bush and Enron and likely will be for a long time. Bush is perceived to personify the swaggering ideal Texan and Enron the ruthless business elite. To those of us who have actually BEEN to Houston, those projections ain't exactly spot-on, but they're in the same ballpark. Our city's continuing humanitarian response to this disaster will hopefully go a long way into showing the rest of this vast nation a glimpse of Houston's truest character.
At what point in time did the Pres live in Houston? I know his parents live here...but his official home is Crawford, correct? and afaik, he lived in Dallas for a time. I think it is pretty basic...NYers are threatened by us. Our people are a better class of people, and our city is a better place to live for normal people. Screw them damn yankees...
Are we forgetting that Houston is a Democratic town? The NYT shouldn't let facts get in the way of their anti-Houston rant. I suggest Chevron and co. get together to decide how to best punish NYC and make it beg for mercy.
how bout we double the price of the gas we ship up to them? or even better......send them back Moochie and Baker for second rounders?
I sense people here, from all walks of life, are pretty much united agaisnt NYC. So there is not much to debate politically, unless you want to stretch things. To get more publicity, why not move it to Hangout? I bet that would be more fun.
It sure is a terrible paper. What a piece of trash. I forone don't wipe my ass with it, but it fits perfectly in my birds cage so he can crap on it all day and night.
