    Just stop now.

I'll point out that if you Google "University of Mississippi integration" you get 196,000 hits. If you Google "University of Mississippi integration national guard" you get 99,000 hits. Google "University of Mississippi Meredith" and you get 135,000 hits. Google "University of Mississippi Kennedy" and you get 385,000 hits. That last one is probably what's driving Instaputz and your ilk to try to make it look like the people who were on the losing side are the ones now impressed with the outcome. Many people remember. Many people have written about it. Again, you don't get to claim it any more than you get to say MLK would be comfortable in today's GOP.

Can Basso go a day without making a post in the form of a question?

so rimmy, i'm wondering, if one had come across a blog posting about some long ago event, and said post linked to an article published several years prior, on another content site, what would be a rim-approved method of raising said event for discussion here?

link to the original article, w/o referencing the referring site? link to the blog, where one discovered the article in the first place?

    what would a "winner" do?

No. You could have said, hey, I just saw this and thought it might be interesting. That would be good. You could have linked to the original NYTimes story. That would be good. What you did, however, was to give one of the wingnut bloggers credit for resurrecting a story that was never dead. This has been a pattern of wingers of late... trying to claim they are the true force for equality, stating repeatedly that MLK would support GOP ideas, arguing that opposition to equal opportunity and minority preference is in keeping with the civil rights goals.

linking to instapundit is "claiming MLK would have supported GOP ideas?

absurd, of course, but then, so are you, and if you think instapundit is a "wingnut" blog, then you know absolutely nothing about that which you criticize.

have a look around- you might be surprised.

See, that's part of the problem. It wasn't long ago. It wasn't even before my lifetime. It's still with us and still affecting people who lived through it and knew people who lived through it and knew of it, no matter how much you guys pretend it is ancient history. Face it basso... you tried to score a political point here and you got called on it. You either did it on purpose or unintentionally, but you did it... and I'm not sure which is worse.

That's not what I said, but to understand what I said would take a nuanced mind, few of which are found in your circles.

Sigh, Basso started a "once in a blue moon" good thread that is not bashing on Obama, and it had to go down like this.

    i did neither.

just spent the last 20 minutes or so listening to the finale to the beethoven 9th, with a nice Sagratino di Montefalco. Beethoven (do i need to link to Goethe?) had it wrong: Alle menschen wird nicht bruder.

    rimmy- du bist ein troll.

Nope, the original is correct, but I wouldn't expect you to get it. After all, you think the language of the Declaration of Independence only pertains to US citizens... and you continuously speak up for a group of people who demonstrably do not believe all mankind are brothers.

I'm assuming Instapundit chose to highlight the case of James Meredith, because James Meredith later renounced the civil rights movement and went to work for Jesse Helms, avowed racist.

OK, I knew nothing of that story and was glad to have read the NYT article.

I don't know anything about any blog websites, but basso posted the length of the original NYT article so that is what I read and I enjoyed it.

Honestly, reading such a story makes me sad. Not only because of the story, but because I didn't know about it. I have studied a lot of history (admittedly, not much US beyond what was required) but this event never came up and if I had seen a movie depicting what was described I would have thought it a little fantastical. Seriously, racists going against the US army in guerrilla warfare? No way.

My misanthropic instincts are continually bolstered by reality, unfortunately.

what i came away with was the comment by one of the guardsmen about hesitating to fire, since there might be neighbors on the other side. these guys were true heroes, and the times, and political considerations, meant they never got any recognition.

and, although it wasn't spelled out in the article, it's a further testament to what makes this country so unique- not that we don't have problems, or make mistakes, but that the country, individual by individual (like our guardsman friend above) is striving to overcome them, and build a better, more perfect nation that can live out, and up to, the ideals of Jefferson, Lincoln, and King.
