Large Church Gets Larger, Defying Trend

Audio for this story will be available at approx. 7:30 p.m. ET

on NPR's All Things Considered, July 18, 2005
When it moved into a 16,000-seat building, Houston's Lakewood Church became the largest in the United States. The megachurch, which includes waterfalls in one enormous building, reflects a different direction from other churches, which are investing in satellite facilities. Lakewood's leader, Rev. Joel Osteen, says people will feel comfortable coming to a church service in a venue they've already attended for a game or concert. Capella Tucker of Houston Public Radio reports.

Being Baptist was too limiting for their donor base. We got to get some money from all God's sinners!

Yes. When I say its in the middle of a neighborhood, I mean its not even on the main drag. Its literally in the middle of a neighborhood.

I'm sorry, but I feel that that church is going to be a terrorist target. Muslim extremeists would love for an opportunity to take out 16,000 christians. I hope the security there is TIGHT. Just being honest.

On the other hand, I love Joel Olsteen, great guy and great preacher. I recommend reading the book "Your best life yet" written by him. Even if you aren't christian, it teaches you how to live right and when you live right good things happen, always.

I guess that depends on what you consider to be good.

I feel Joel's message is always good - do good, live right, and your life will be good, God will reward you.. it's all this self help stuff.. I apologize if I'm wrong.

Self help isn't bad in and of itself -- it's just that Christianity isn't JUST about the happy stuff... it's about dealing with pain and suffering and loss and ugliness and sin.. about stuff that doesn't go right all the time.. alot of telelvangelists sidestep that.. it just isn't about the here and now, the "God will help your house payments, or God will help your kids get into a good school, or you too can enter the great happy American middle class lifestyle.. " -- it's more about the life after this, about patience and perseverence.. well, I digress. Sorry to take this off topic.

Pastor Osteen should have held out until the dome became available. Now THAT would have been something!

I don't know if I've seen God there, but I have seen W.A.S.P., Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Marylin Manson and countless others.

I have known Joel for years, he plays b-ball at the Post Oak YMCA, a very nice guy.

Hustles a lot, decent midrange game......

Freaks me out that he went on to follow his father, he always told me that he would never do that.

    Oh well...

I like Joel Osteen, more power to him!

I think he's non-dem because really his message isn't anything that everyone can't relate to. I consider him more of a motivational speaker than a religious preacher, his message is very general and all people can relate to it. I guess that's why his Church is incredibly profitable business. Good for him, he's a nice guy.

The only problem is that I saw him on LArry King the other day and he was avoiding all tough questions about homosexuality, gay marriage, and a bunch of other hot issues facing our society/our world today. He kept saying that he doesn't like to "judge people" or "be negative" and pretty much dodged all questions that had to do with Christianity or his own personal beliefs.

He just prefers to stay happy and positive about everything, which I guess is what people want to hear.

Not funny. You obviously know nothing about Lakewood or Osteen.

John Osteen, Joel's father, left the Southern Baptist Church in the 60s, when the SBC threatened to kick him out for being baptized inthe Holy Spirit.

    Ahhh, Amigo. Number 7.

Instrumental prophet spreading the word during the MECCA of the '90s when God descended upon the SUMMIT. Two years, as a matter of fact, the Man cometh and we rejoiced.

I still follow this religion. He will return. I believe we have Yet AnOther Mesiah coMING.
