you may have inadvertently highlighted (at least part of) the solution- parental accountability. you learned at home, and have (evidently) performed above the norm (for your school). also, there may in fact have been money available, but entrenched bureaucracy, and the teachers unions, don't always ensure that money provided is well spent, nor competence rewarded and advanced.

I find it ironic that in a thread about failing educational achievement you are giving an anti-intellectual rant.

There have been cost of living increases followed by pay cuts. That's hardly addressing the problem of low teacher salaries.

Again spending money on education doesn't target specifically black males or cause anything or any other groups that need targeted help.

its easy to throw out terms like acocuntability but if you want to address the problem you have to dig deeper than that. I'm sure most black parents in surburban homes want their kids to do well acedemically and pay attention, but it goes beyond that. the parents have to be equipped with what it takes to teach their kids how to learn.

for example, studies show that kids who are read to at a young age have a head start on learning. parents have to know these kinds of things other than just telling their kids to study when they get in school.

seems self-evident to me, and i would think that black parents in suburban homes (by which i infer "middle class") would know this as well. it's certainly a message i see repeated again and again, by doctors, educators, administrators, signs on the subway, etc.

one has to be receptive to the message, of course...

on second thought, i find it incredible you'd argue that black parents don't know they're supposed read to their kids. is that what you meant?

yes that's what I meant, a lot of parents in surburban homes don't how to get their kids off on the right track, only a few cities have subways

really? you're arguing the lack of subways as the reason black boys are failing in school?

didnt read the whole thread and this may be completely off topic but just throwing something out there..
If a certain ethnicity can be more athletically superior to one (size, height, strength, running, leaping ability) it also possible that another ethnicity can superior in intelligence genetically? You see it in monkeys and dogs. Certain breeds dogs are more intelligent than others.
Anyways a controversial topic that has been discussed before...

wow way to jump to conclusions and make things up

That was not my point.. it was to demonstrate that we are all different. I don't think any one ethnicity/race or whatever is superior but different. I think there were different conditions that allowed certain traits to excel in certain areas. You really have to look at your definition of being stupid or smart. Today smart generally means you have a high IQ. But having a high IQ just means you excel at a certain measurement test. Does that mean you are superior? going to be more successful?? make more money?? be happier? I don't think so. I think in the context of the study done above certain regions/people just excel at this particular kind of test. Does having the ability to run faster or jump higher make someone superior? (unless you can make it to the NBA and make millions :)) Does having a larger brain make someone superior? Nope.. Just saying isn't it possible that certain traits are more prominent in certain gene pools? I don't think that's completely absurd since we are all clearly different.

'These poor and pitiful Negroes got all these trials and tribulations. Now I have to stand up here and teach them how to read and write and count.' Well, if we can run faster, jump higher and shoot a basketball straighter off of inadequate diets, than we can read, write, count and think of those same diets.

Again I say, this guy has done some pretty good research on this topic. If you are truly interested then just watch his lecture. It covers much of what y'all are debating about, and then some:

What do you want? We spend a huge amount of money on education. We have targeted poorer areas with Robin Hood schemes and the results are disappointing. We do not have limitless resources to devote to this.

How about this. You say you want smaller class sizes to help students. How badly do you want them? Enough to give up 10% of your pay to hire more teachers? How about 20%? The ball's in your court.
