nobody denies its a cultural issue, its what is going on culturally. its a complicated issue. i think in a lot of black homes, there is a over compensation to black males which may not prepare them for the real world. what i mean by that is that i think in a lot of homes the black can do no wrong because of the perception that they will be beat down in the rest of the world. how that affects them acedemically i don't know.

I never really thought about that until i believe it was sports illustrated did a piece on kobe when he was accused of rape and it went into this issue.

also in some homes there maybe the exact oppposite, some "your daddy wasn't **** you won't be ****" going on. its a mix of a lot of factors, and I think its going to take a lot to get past them. eventually, for better of for worse, black males will have to stop looking at themselves as separate from the bunch, because being "black male" comes with a bunch of negatives.

exactly, it's a "black american" phenomenon, not a specifically black one.

Asians immigrants were enslaved. Should they also get the same treatment? What about if they are immigrants from another country and were oppressed there, during which time their parents were denied education?

I'm sure it is entirely a lack of positive male role models during critical points of development. I don't take for granted the fact that my mother and father were both there for me growing up.

I think there have been studies about the effects of those groups in their nations, but as far as immigrants that come here that were oppressed in their nation they often end up doing the best here, because they see it as an opportunity, and have great hope.

I'm talking about studies, and evidence. What I said was that immigrant groups including Africans and other groups that were oppressed in their own countries usually don't need extra help here, and do even better than English only speakers or whites.

I also pointed out that sutdies show members of certain groups regardless of their economic status and family's education still under-perform. I'm sorry the evidence and studies bother you. It has nothing to do with liberals racism though.

Money doesn't make people smart, it certainly doesn't hurt, but it takes generations to change this kind of cultural schism... parents that don't care about education have kids that don't care about education, and so on and so forth. If I keep talking, I'm just going to sound like the grumpy, bitter, old version of Bill Cosby, so I'll stop.

An idea to break the cycle quickly is to send kids to military style boot camp all boys school.

A good question. Here's another related article:

    http://www.eastbayexpress.com/gyrobase/rich-black-flunking/Content?oid=1070459

Since this is D&D, I'll note that this reminds me a great deal of this "middle America" thing going on in this country politically. Somehow, being intelligent and going to prestigious universities as been construed as elitist and is a bad thing, just like "acting white" is a bad thing to these kids. I'd almost go so far as to say there is a financial force behind the scenes that is pushing the idea that intelligence is bad for their own monetary gain -- having stupid people all around you makes you that much more successful.

don't want to sidetrack the thread, but i will note the "middle america" thing is completely different, and has nothing to do with devaluing achievement.

i saw the story you linked earlier- have some friends who live in the Oakland Hills, moved there from SF for the good public schools.

note that the rest of the Oakland district sucks.

Yeah, it would be a derailment I suppose. Sorry.

I'm still reading through it (I just linked it quickly because I found it and thought it applied). It really is a great article for further explaining the statistics in your opening article. It's not an answer many people like to hear or support, either.

as a black person i do not deny that some of the stuff noted in your article does go on, particularly expecting the school district to supervise the kid's education.

black people a generation or 2 removed from poverty probably do not understand what it takes to excel in the education system.
