Uh, no. Melo will wanna get paid. This is his last shot at a huge contract. Now he may accept 16-18 mil instead of 20+ when factoring in the amount he'll save in taxes by playing in Houston vs. Chicago or New York(similar to Dwight rejecting the extra money L.A. was offering), but no way will he play for a discount like Duncan.

A) get another superstar
B) get another coach

 

The team receiving the signed-and-traded player has all the leverage. You don't trade big assets in those scenarios. What did Miami give up to get Lebron or Bosh? NYK would take any assets that represented positive value to the franchise. Linsanity would still be a draw in NY. Asik is a valuable asset. That would be enough salary to shift. A pick or 2 could always be moved if needed to sweeten the pot.

Lakers - you have enough for a max player but next 2 years will be Kobe's last. Then what after that?

Houston - Has to get rid of Lin and a few other contracts or have someone take those pieces to get Carmelo. That's a bit taxing.

Same for LA Clippers. Clippers will not give up Griffin.

Chicago is the first option, then Houston, then the LA teams.

I don't know if Carmelo will opt in and stay for one more year and then be in the class of 2015. It's up for grabs right now but he does have options.
