Yes, Morey is certainly a calculated opportunist and is very open minded and creative. The key to Morey and his philosophy isn't really metrics, it is the philosophy to look for new ways to get an advantage over other teams by utilizing under appreciated information to get a better and more clear picture of a players actual impact on a game. Hell, the Rockets philosophy has DRASTICALLY changed since Morey's early years as a GM. An example is the offense the Rockets now run and the hire of McHale.

Morey would be beyond giddy to get Melo for Asik/Lin/Jones and 2 #1's. The Rockets would find creative ways to make it work, like the Heat did after losing to the Mavericks.

Things are not static, they are dynamic.... and those that are successful follow suit. Look at Riley in LA, then NY and now Miami.... look at Popvich early in SA, he controlled EVERYTHING, now his players control most the on court decisions, because Popovich adjusted to the league changing... same with Thibs in Chicago.... they are running a completely different offense than when Rose is healthy, they are actually running the offense through Noah from the outside!...... Morey and Ainge are others.

I don't doubt cyber at all, but, there really is no leverage. Either stay with NY and get the most money, or, sign with Chicago like how Dwight did with Houston and took less. Morey has to pull some strings to pull this off, so, I don't really see this as a leverage play.

Only leverage is saying he wants Houston, and Phil and NYK better trade him there to 'get something instead of letting him walk and getting nothing'

Dead on. Anytime something "leaks" from the Rockets office you just have to ask do Morey and the Rockets benefit from the leak? I can imagine what Morey's reaction would be if something in the FO unintentionally got in the news.

So who benefits from the Melo leak? Not the Knicks. The Rockets? It would be one way to expand the competition for Melo in the off season. So that just leaves Melo.

How does Carmelo benefit from the leak?

There wasn't a "leak", the media put the pieces together and ran with it... it gets hits for ESPN and ratings improve.

Basically saying that the Knicks better have a plan to get him a superstar teammate soon and they better lay it out with all the details or he will walk to a team that already has superstars for him to play with. Bulls (Rose) or Rockets (Harden/Howard).

And neither Chicago nor Houston can even offer the maximum (even after dumping Lin/Asik or Boozer) or even all that close to it. So he loses the extra year, the higher raises and even the max salary. Probably closer to taking $40-42M less with Houston or Chicago than the $33M being reported.

To scare the Knicks into really taking care of things and putting a winner out there.

Playing the media. If two smart organizations like Chicago and Houston seem to be interested in Melo, shouldn't everyone be interested in Melo? Nothing but gaming the system.

He wants to see a better plan from NY. It's not enough to just say, oh we are going after KD, Westbrook, Love, etc in 2015 when there's no guarantee they will sign in NY.

Also, this puts the pressure on Chicago, which I feel is his #1 choice if he decides to leave.

Morey is worried about having 3 max guys signed long term. He is worried if Dwights back gives, he will be stuck.

why would the knicks trade us for lin and asik. why would they want that? they could just let him walk and get immediate cap relief.

i could see this working, assuming boston would be OK taking lin and asik as expiring deals to gear up for FA in 2015.

    No state income tax *COUGH*.

Melo would actually make almost the same money coming to Houston in a S&T, and possibly more over the first 4 years once you factor in the difference in cost of living (NY is really, really expensive).

Yes, he gives up the 5th year, but is 4+1 years with ETO *really* that much better than 4 years guaranteed? Nobody passes on the opt out unless they're injured anyway.

And nobody *knows* who Phil can get in the upcoming FA in 2015. Or whether it will be sufficient to build a championship contender, or will even be players that Melo likes?

And then we don't know how much of a pay cut Melo will take in NY to "wait" for a rebuild. It might not be enough for Phil to keep him.

While the chances of Melo staying with Phil Jackson around is better, I don't think it's a sure bet. Not when there's a ton of unknowns surrounding the Knicks going forward.

And let's not forget the James Dolan factor. He's saying the right things, but would *YOU* bet your career on James Dolan staying out of the way? The Knicks fan base *HOPES* that Dolan stays out of the way, but that's all it is... just a Hope.

That's dissapointing to hear seeing as though Dwight's window here could only be for anouther 2 seasons past this season. It's time to go all in morey wheather that's a love, LMA or melo it's time to try and go all in and give the city the best possible chance.

Morey would be "stuck" regardless if Howard's back gives out. The Rockets are not winning anything without Howard or Harden Healthy. Likewise, he would be stuck AFTER he signs Parsons and eats up any available cap space.

The Knicks have been talking to Jackson since early January.

It is odd that the rumor floats AFTER Jackson is signed and not before.

If that's the case, then why did Morey make a play at Melo around this year's trade deadline?

Has Dwight's back recently become an issue again? Surely Morey has known about his chronic back issues dating back to LA/Orl.

Just trying to fit your assertion within the timeline of Morey's attempts to add a 3rd star around the deadline. Thanks.
