We'll see, they already have a large payroll and Rondo's contract is one of the increasing types.

With the need for good Centers all around the NBA, someone is going to give him a lot of money.

Your point doesn't even make sense because LeBron IS on a top-4 playoff team. And Randolph is nowhere near LeBron's category. Get real man.

So to only make the ASG once (last season) despite averaging close to 20-10 for each of the last 8 years is pretty indicative of the fact that he just isn't a winner. Like I said earlier, he's all stats, no wins. He's in the Corey Maggette-Kevin Martin category.

    This plus what Deck said.

Randolph is not the answer for any of the Rockets problems, he is not a clear upgrade on what the team already has. I don't get it, hopefully it's all smoke.

I understand the point you're making, but I wanted to address some quick things.

    a) I have a hard time classifying Scola (8.3 RBP) as an excellent rebounder. Yes, he can get you 10+ boards some games. Zach Randolph does it every game. I don't think your giving that enough credit. The Rockets are 22nd in the league in rebound per game differential (Your rebounds - Their rebounds). Zach Randolph is hauling in almost five more rebounds than Scola - per game. That's a lot of extra possessions or defensive stops (not allowing the offense to get the off. board).

    b) No question, $16M is way too much. I don't expect Randolph to command that type of salary anymore. I see him more of making Kevin Martin type money. As another poster previously pointed out as well, there doesn't appear to be many FA players with cap space this summer either -- further decreasing the market for him. Keep in mind as well the new CBA, which will have some type of provisions to curb the cost of player's salaries (lower # of max contracts/years?). If he's asking for 16-17+ a year, yes let's move on. But I don't see him commanding that type of salary because of the factors I previously listed.

If we continue down the same path, we can expect the same results. Everyone got on me earlier in the season because I kept using our record in discussion points: but you are what your record says you are. We need a change -- something to change the culture of this team. Zach Randolph and the added toughness, rebounding, and attitude that he would bring might just be it.

I don't know if his contract should be what stops the deal, it's the last year of his contract...

Randolph's grabbing 5 more rebounds a game this season. For his career, he's averaged 1.1 more rebounds per game more than Scola, and also has missed a lot of games. In the 9 seasons prior to this one, he's played 80 or more games twice. Every other season he's played less than 70 games. There's a lot of ways to measure toughness. Staying on the court is one. Scola is also considered tough around the league, in my opinion, and not because he's never missed a game. He's a very physical guy, but in a different way than Randolph because they have different physiques. I remember when we got Martin (I think it was Martin) he said that Scola was one of those guys he hated to play against, but was glad to play with. Scola's a master of the elbow to the body that the ref doesn't see, the arm across the face that looks unintentional. He can be a load. Having said that, if we could get Randolph for Kevin Martin money, I'd be more intrigued with the idea. I think he's making about 17.3 million this season, not 16. Something tells me he wouldn't go for Kevin Martin money unless, as you suggested, the new CBA forces him into that ballpark, something we can't know now and Morey can't know by the deadline.

Frankly, I can't see trading Scola for him based on value in relation to his contract. I can see trading Scola for a long, athletic, defensive center, something that Randolph simply isn't. Yes, they play a different style and Randolph does take up more space in the low post, but he doesn't block shots, not even as often as Scola does, as I pointed out earlier. That's not what I hope Morey is looking for. If Scola is dealt for an Anthony type of "super star" player, or for that center I want so badly on the team, and we can get Randolph for that Martin money, then you bet.

FYI, I was never impressed with Bosh and Brook Lopez and always felt those two were overrated on this board. Pau Gasol leading Memphis to the playoffs isn't really the same as what Z-Bo is doing...Pau Gasol had Shane "Teflon don" Battier and Mighty Mouse as his 2nd best players. Z-Bo is rolling around with a solid young defensive C in Marc Gasol as well as a cadre of top 10 lottery picks (Gay, Mayo, Conley JR).

Zach Randolph's arrival coencided with the growth of Marc Gasol, Rudy Gay and Conley JR. I guess a much better question would why did they only go 40-42 when he got there, and only on pace to be a 0.500-ish team this year? He's supposed to be a 20-10 player in his prime surrounded by solid lottery picks. Shouldn't they be on par with the Thunder or better than Portland at least? Hell the Clips might end up with a better record than them and they only have Griffin, Gordan, De Andre Jordan and chump change.

LTF, which hold more weight? The last two years of play? Or his entire playing history prior to the last two years? ZR's skills have never been in question, everybody agrees he has legit all star talent and should have been a franchise player right now if he had not been a headcase. But he HAS been a headcase, and he has been a cancer for most of his career. There's more to b-ball than just using stats, the same stats which are saying Corey Maggette is an under-the-radar all star worthy player or that Mo Williams is a very good pg are the same stats that are saying Z-Bo is an allstar.

Z-Bo is playing nice now, but he also expressed repeatedly that he expects 16M a year type of money for his production. If he receives say 12M a year for his services would he consider that enough? Or we pout Bonzi Wells style and go AWOL on the team right after he signs his contract? This is why Scola is a much better player than Z-Bo, at least with him you know what you're gonna get. With someone like Z-Bo, you're not sure if you're getting a steal or a rip-off until the end of the contract. If all you look at is upside, sure Z-bo would be a nice player to have. However ask Portland and NY if getting Z-bo was worth it and you'll have a different answer.

To me, Zach Randolph is untouchable
He is almost unstoppable like LaMarcus Alridge now

He may be 'untouchable' but we have the assets to remove that label. Remain optimistic because i'm backing Daryl on this one. If he can turn a beat up T-mac into our best scorer/player in Kevin Martin, Jordan Hill and Jeffries plus a draft pick or so I mean what's in store for us this year?

I've always liked Randolphs game on the block. I've said years ago, he's a top 5 scorer on the blks. He's a better player than scola, no doubt and deckard does have a point about him being 7-8m more of a player. I will say this, people were wondering if david lee and his 20-10 was the same or better than amare and his 27-9. Well, its been debated over and over again that all points arent created equal.

Amare has shown in new york that his impact on the game is greater than David lee. I can also say that randolph and his impact is greater than scola.I'm not saying its 7m more, but its more.I highly doubt that with the grizz so close to the playoffs they will give randolph up for scola. I think they will give up gasol before randolph, but he will have to come down on his price tag. Maybe memphis is scared and they are willing to do a yao-scola for randolph-thabeet. I doubt it, but it would give them a cheaper alternative and give them a chance to keep gasol.

    1. Randolph isn't a center. He's only 6'9" and he's not athletic enough to guard taller centers in the low post.

    2. One of the reasons why he hasn't been able to carry a team to this point in his career is that he's selfish with the basketball. He averages 1 assist per game and as a result, doesn't fit into the flow of the offense. He's pretty much been this way his whole career.

We need a shotblocking center and not a so-so PF with a history of loosing at NBA level.

The fact that we are being thrown in this discussion says a lot about how lost our management is.

It would have been nice to see this team play with a defensive center for a full year, yet this management makes it very hard for the coach and the players to compete fairly with other rosters in the league, given that they are 20 millons down in payroll for the third consecutive year.

Adelman is only trying to outscore opponents. Playing ZBO at center would help.

Rondo + Perkins is the future of the Celtics. I really don't see the Celtics lose an awesome championship opportunity to save a few million. If they gave Perkins no offer, then they'd be really showing they are not interested in the championship--which I HUGELY doubt.

I say we make a run at Nene. I don't see anyone else too realistic unless we take on Kaman.

New York is just still pissed that we raped them last year in that trade, so they are just making bogus rumors.

This team needs a legitimate CENTER and not another pf.

    a) No offense Deckard, but I find it a bit disingenuous to compare career numbers. Scola came in to the league as a Euro vet who was ready to contribute right away; Randolph was a rookie who had to earn PT. Comparing career numbers takes into account Randolphs first two years in which he grabbed 1.7 and 4.5 RBP in 5.8min and 16.9min, respectively. Scola was playing play much more in his first two years; I don't think it's a fair comparison.

I understand the worry about contract year numbers, so why not take a look at the past three years? Over that span, ZBO is averaging close to 12 boards a game (11.66). That's still 3+ boards more than Scola has been averaging in the last three years. Put simply, Randolph is a MUCH better rebounder than Luis.

    b) As far as Zach's injury history, I don't think it's anything that should cause concern. It's not like he's had major surgery or anything. I just don't see that as being too big of a factor in the decision making process on this.

    c) I honestly don't see Zach keeping the same salary or getting close to it; that hasn't really factored into my decision making process much, but I suppose it's a valid concern. I haven't seen any reports of what he's looking for, but I just don't see him getting anywhere near his current salary. I've been operating under the assumption that it would be in the KMart range.

I just searched again and found an article saying that he wants David Lee/Boozer money . "Randolph, Bosh and Lee were only the three players to average at least 20 points and 10 rebounds last season." Makes sense; I suspect Morey would let him try to go find that in the open market. Boozer's deal is a little high whereas Lee's deal is Kevin Martin'ish. So we're close on the #s -- or closer than assuming his starting salary would be 16+.

    d) I just don't think we should pass on an upgrade like this if it doesn't deplete any significant assets. Under the hypothetical I've posted a few times, really we're only losing Shane and Scola -- that is very reasonable, IMO, for a 20/10 PF. It doesn't preclude us from further trading for a defensive C or going after one this summer. Yes, we need a shotblocking center -- but if you can upgrade the PF spot without losing assets that you need to acquire that center, you need to take a hard look at it.

    a) As we've seen with Jordan Hill, where you were drafted means very little. Mayo is a bench SG whose losing minutes; Conley is a middle-of-the-pack PG. Gay is good, but he's not a Brandon Roy (pre-injuries) by any stretch. The Grizzlies aren't that talented.

    b) Come on. You told me that Zach Randolph was a net detriment to his team. I just showed you that since he's gotten to the Grizzlies, they have improved their record every year and are on the verge of making the playoffs this year. Instead of saying, "OK, maybe he's not as selfish/terrible as I thought," you came back and try to deflect credit from him (the best player on their team and top five rebounder in the NBA last two years) and give it to the other guys. Whatever helps your argument I guess? I mean good lord, you just said the Clippers might end up with a better record!

    Clippers: 20-34
    Grizzlies: 30-26

Do you even check things before you post them? First it was the 'net-detriment' cliche and now it's Clippers v. Grizzlies record.

Do me a favor. Watch Zach Randolph for ten games. If you actually did that, I think you would change your tune. Too many people are going off what they think they know from his POR/NYK days and his YouTube goofs.

    c) Recent history holds more weight; in other words, I care more about what he's done over the last three years than what he was doing six years ago. We're not getting the player from six years ago; we're getting the one that plays the game today.

    d) As far as the bolded, the only thing I've seen reported is that he's looking for Carlos Boozer/David Lee type money. That seems to be below the max in the 10-14M/year range. With the depressed market and new CBA, I think we could get him for closer to 10M than 14M.
