With the lack of big men and how the Rockets take a lot three I'm totally expecting the return of the Knicks Z-Bo if he were here.

I think this was the biggest objection to trading for Randolph during the Portland/NY days. He got in trouble with the law and got labeled as selfish and a black hole, fair or not (I didn't watch him enough then to have an opinion).

But he's not that same player. He's been great in his two years in Memphis, never complaining about shots or teammates. He didn't get a contract extension this summer like he wanted, but instead of pouting he's gone out and shown exactly why he deserves to be paid that kind of money.

People keep saying there won't be much of a difference between him and Scola defensively -- I disagree. Randolph's rebounding would be a huge help for our defense. We often get killed on the boards by teams with size, so adding the NBA's third leading rebounder would be a big help.

Yes, we still need a defensive center. But that doesn't mean that you shouldn't look to upgrade other positions just because you might have a bigger need at the five spot. You take advantage of what's available and what would upgrade your team. A trade for Zach Randolph involving Luis Scola would not deplete our assets to the point that we couldn't pursue other opportunities.

For example, a possible trade could be Luis Scola, Jeffries, & Battier for Zach Randolph, Haddadi & Carroll. The Rockets land their PF, clear a spot in the wing rotation for Terrence Williams, and get a big man in Haddadi. The Grizzlies save money by "locking in" a cheaper PF to pair with Marc, Gay and Conley. They could keep Battier to help with their young wings or move him to a contender for a possible 1st rounder.

You can still go after the Perkins & DeAndre Jordan types in the summer -- even if it means offering sign-and-trade deals. I think it would be a mistake if you passed on upgrading Scola-Zach just because we have a bigger need elsewhere. I don't believe it would cost significant assets and I think it would make us a much better team.

Z-Bo had no issues off the court with the Knicks and Clippers. The problems were on it.

The Grizzlies aren't a 3pt shooting team. Their team attempted the least amount of 3s in the Leqague last season. That helps Z-Bo not to play stupid.

    I feel the same way.

I don't like the idea of having 30 yr old players locked into new 5 year deals, unless they are proven winners or multiple all-stars like Kobe or Duncan.

If Zach was in his mid-20s, it would be a different story. Rockets need a C more than another PF anyway.

They aren't going anywhere without a defensive C. It would be the Texas Grizzlies as the perennial 7th-9th place team. Playoff fodder or Late lottery.

This is the guy who almost got busted for felony possesion of mar1juana last year. Apparently he had a storage unit filled with it. The cops followed one of his buds to the scene and busted him. Luckily that buddy of his took the fall for everything. So, yes there are some off-court issues with Randolph. You don't want a guy you're paying $17 million a year to go to jail for something like that, even if he is better than Scola.

This guy has put up amazing numbers everywhere he's gone. He is one of the best rebounding and scoring big men of the last 8 years. People forget, he was just a baby when he entered the league. He played one year of college and went to the NBA at 19. He's matured a lot since then and although there are certainly attitude concerns, he's got a lot of great years ahead of him. In fact, he's just starting to hit his best years. If we could sign Randolph in the offseason, and move scola for a guy like granger. a granger, randolph, martin combo would be deadly. trade AB, contracts, and draft picks for another impact player, and we are competitive again.

problem is that he's lost wherever he has gone, even when surrounded by talent. he doesn't elevate the level of play for those around him. is reportedly a bad locker room guy. and has already peaked with nothing but a downtrend ahead of him.

    so uh..... sign me up?

You're making it sound like it's Steve Nash who's getting the 5 yr deal. Randolph is not even 30 yet. Yes he's almost there, but a 5 yr deal would end pretty much around the time he starts to decline. Bigs like him don't hit that mark until about 34 yrs of age. That 5th yr he'll be an expiring deal as well.

    a) When was he ever surrounded by talent? Not in POR, NY, or LAC. Randolph was a knucklehead in his early years, but he's not the same player as all the YouTube videos of him chucking threes show. Memphis has kept him in the low post and he's been playing great.

    b) There have been no issues with Zach Randolph in Memphis' locker room. Just like there were no issues with Ron Artest in Sacramento's locker room.

    c) Already peaked? This is one of the best seasons he's had in his career. There are no signs that he is slowing down or suddenly won't be just as good next year or the year after.

If we got him we still need a Center, he's only 6-9, but if you're opposed to a trade involving him and Scola... You need to watch memphis games the man is a beast in the paint. Get into a 4 team trade w/ Ny and Denver, Between Memphis and Houston we could get Denver a whole new young starting lineup to rebuild with.

I've been messing with the trade machine,
    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=4nk88dc

we get Nene Randolph and Chandler all upgrades. Chandler can still play D and is an upgrade on O from Shane.

Memphis would probably need a pick to make it fair for them but they get alot of cap space next offseason.

Never been a terribly huge fan but he has always been on very poor teams his whole career. And scola is my favorite rocket next to shane and chuck wagon, but Randolph is a definite upgrade over scola at pf, in terms of rebounding, scoring, and defense. No brainer there.

Memphis would maybe take some of our expirings for Randolph instead of just straight up losing a borderline all star in free agency? Tough though for them. I doubt they do that because they are in the playoff race and would be doomed to the lottery if they let him go. Maybe scola and expirings. Maybe they see scola as a "poor man's" zach Randolph and they take him and some expirings in a sign and trade. That leaves AB and T-Will and the draft pick to dangle for a center. I know some of yall cringe when I say T-Will. I personally think he belongs on the bench or in the D-League, but we can all agree that he ain't making the team any better from the end of the bench. Landing us a center would be his way of contributing to the team.

Lowry/Ish (on the cheap just like AB was, then in 4 years he can win MIP and get pissed when we don't pay him. Lather, rinse, repeat...)
    Martin/Lee
    Battier(bought out and re-signed)/Bud
    Randolph/Chuck/Patt
    ???/Miller/Hill(if not traded)

I would want him, but why would Memphis trade a great player to their division rival and vice versa

The Portland teams had talent. This Memphis team has talent. We are not one player away as we thought we were when we gambled on the risk of acquiring Artest. Yes he's peaked and at the top, thus his best statistical year. once at your peak, as defined by peak, there is nowhere to go but down.

It would be a horrible signing and would reek of desperation.

I straight up dig your trade. I see it as feasible by all teams. Nice.

Randolph seems like a "stats guy" to me and doesn't contribute to winning. He's the power forward version of Kevin Martin, pass.
