Totally in agreement Rasselas. I definitely have been envisioning a huge group of Rockets fans taking over some bar and rooting for the Rockets. I've even imagined articles written in publications because it'd be bizarre too have such a big group of Rox fans. I definitely think it's possible though. Yao Ming only fans in NY would probably be more than enough. Last year at the game at MSG, it felt like 25% of the crowd was rooting for the Rockets. With all that said, the bars with cute girls sound good, but I think we should try to get more of a central location. There seems to be a good number of people from Brooklyn (including myself) so I think going a little lower than the upper east/west is best. I'm down for where ever but I just want the biggest turn out possible.
Well, we have 2 votes for Blondies (2nd ave and 92nd st.) on the east side and 2 votes for the Barrow Street Alehouse (W.4th and Barrow). We supposedly have 27 members according to the yahoo group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/houstonrocketsnyc) So please vote or chime in. I hope we can come to a consensus because it would kind of defeat the purpose to have 5 different bar meets on Thurs. with only 3 CC members at each. Perhaps we can move the location around to accomodate people in the future. It's not a huge deal for me where we meet, but I want whatever location will get us the most people. Please chime in if you can make it with your preferred location.
Hey Im coming to Ny in the begining of December.. Maybe I can hook up with you guys... and catch a game... Im thinking about moving to NY or back to Los Angeles... someone please e-mail me.. TheFelderFirm@aol.com Thanks.. Fred
i agree with you. we need a more central location. i'm good with midtown to downtown to brooklyn. upper east and west sides- no can do.
Riviera -7th Ave, just north of Christopher -a million TVs, and if you show up regularly the bartender will give you a serious hook-up. or Barrow Street Alehouse on W.4th and Barrow both seems easy commute after work from midtown and downtown. either one will work for me. my only reservation about upper east side location is that it's hell to get back to brooklyn after 11pm.
Here's another alternative: Lots of tv's. There's an event downstairs that night but the VIP room will be open and reserved for at 10 nyc rocket fans (* we can increase the number of people before the game if necessary) The bar boasts 45 flat, plasma, HDTV, projection screen TVs that show just about every sporting event imaginable any takers? 99 Hudson St (Night Life - Sports Bars) 99 Hudson St, New York 10013 • 212-219-0900 TRIBECA. A popular watering hole for the after-work crowd, this two-level sports bar sees most of its action when one of the New York teams (usually the Giants or Knicks) is on the tube. In that case, expect the bar area to be congested with rabid barstool quarterbacks and point guards. The bar boasts 45 flat, plasma, HDTV, projection screen TVs that show just about every sporting event imaginable. Indeed, opening and closing times are solely dependant on what sports are on TV that day. This is the consummate sports lounge - comfortable seating, authentic sports memorabilia decorating the walls, quirky video games, billiards and free throw shooting games. The menu fetaures everything from buffalo wings to pasta, and there is a full martini menu. TRAIN: 1, 9 to Franklin St Hours: Daily - opening times vary, call for details Admission: No cover Payment Methods: Cash, Visa, Master Card, Discover, American Express
One of the best sports bars I've been to is Jay Z's spot the 40/40 club. They got a lot of plasma screens everywhere and even have private skyboxes. Not sure if we can fit all the NY/NJ Rocket fans in that place tho.
I'm leaning towards one of these because the commute seems a little better for the general sake of the group. The bar in Tribeca sounds good, but if the trains are only the 1, 9 it might not be so good. Hopefully, we'll get some more thoughts before tip off on Thursday. C'mon guys, let's make this thing work and represent Clutch City out East. It would be pretty cool to get a good regular turnout and even have a place for people all over who come to NYC to visit to have a place to hang out and watch Rockets games.
The bar in Tribeca is close to all the trains I believe...not too far from Chambers so that's pretty much all of the trains.
I'm loving this thread. It's bringing together munco and the I hate Van Gundy fan club. This reminds me of the scene at the end of Naked Gun, when the players from opposing teams all stop fighting, there's peace in the middle east, and the dogs are hugging the postmen. [wipes a tear from eye] I think munco's right: downtowns' the best compromise. Here's how it breaks down: Brooklyn will be very convenient for some people and wildly inconveninet for others. Uptown, alternatively, will be very convenient for some people and wildly inconveninet for others. Downtown is the lukewarm porrige in the middle. It's mildly inconvenient for just about everyone. Should be a half-hour train ride in all directions. UNLESS it's in the west village, in which the 1 and 9 lines don't do much for those on the east side. My 2 cents . . .
Well, I created a poll in the Yahoo Group. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/houstonrocketsnyc/polls QUESTION: Where should we hold the first bar meet? (Oct. 30th, 8P tipoff vs. the Denver Nuggets) Choices: Redd's (Williamsburg) (Grand St and Union Ave) Riviera (W. Village) (7th Ave, N. of Christopher) Blondies (Upper West) (W.79th and Broadway ) Joshua Tree (Murray Hill) (3rd Ave and 33rd St.) Barrow Street Alehouse (W. Village) (W.4th and Barrow) Blondies (Upper East) (92nd between 2nd Ave and 3rd Ave) Ship of Fools (Upper East) (82nd and 2nd Ave) 99 Hudson St. (Tribeca) (Hudson St. and 40/40 Club (Chelsea) (6 West 25th Street ) Please vote at the yahoo group. I hope we get a decent turnout.
So far we have a whopping 3 votes and they're for 3 different places. Anyone? Here are the three with votes: 99 Hudson St. (Tribeca) (Hudson St. and Blondies (Upper East) (92nd between 2nd Ave and 3rd Ave) Riviera (W. Village) (7th Ave, N. of Christopher) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/houstonrocketsnyc/surveys?id=11373776
Although I am not coming this time, I am leaving my opinion. one of you fools needs to take charge!!! Munco, you are organizing, but you are not taking charge. Pick a bar. pick a bar that everyone in the NYC Metro area has a simular rout to. Pick it, and Pick it now. then post it. being overly sensative to every persons imput has put you 1 day fom game time withour a vanue. Take real charge and you will have something here. if the first bar sucks then find a new one the enxt week. once you decide on a home its time to grow your numbers and work a deal with the bar owners. I would definately grab this bull from the horns if i didnt live 100 miles away. so since I am out some one needs to step up. Go for it Munco. tell them where to meet that is in your opinion the most centralized. PEACE
I voted too by the way. Simply for the one thats easiest for me to get too. I would likely only come to a few games anyways.
You know I was thinking this last night. I made a mistake by leaving it open. i should have just picked a bar. With that said: Riviera (W. Village) (7th Ave, N. of Christopher) Who can make it? Thanks!
wee need a bar thats in or around union square. thats pretty easy to get to for everybody. west siders can walk from 6th ave... west village is cool for me, i'm off the L train.
I went with this spot because we had 3 votes for bars in the W. Village, which was the most for any area. It's also a sports bar and there seems to be a good number of trains. In any case, I'll be the asian guy with not much hair on his head sitting with a Yao Ming Bobblehead (yes, I will feel a bit weird but i figure we need a good luck mascot/item and the bobblehead should make it easy for you guys to find me). I'll try to get there around 7:30P - 7:45P. Bar Meet: Riviera (W. Village) (7th Ave, N. of Christopher) http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/7117603/?cslink=search_name_cust
