And you are free to it. Anyway if gay marriage is legalized that doesn't mean you won't get to voice your opinion and anyway as an Aussie gay marriage in the US doesn't affect you legally to begin with.
I feel as if some people think letting same sex couples/alternative couples get married that it might open up some pandora's box. Here's my thing with it, would I be presumptuous to say that alot of these couples already have existing and formal relationships, share the same household, and proceed together in legal and social matters. http://suite101.com/article/the-history-of-marriage-customs-in-japan- a212185 Now tell me out of these 20 marriages, which ones are not traditional or founded in ancient societies or other time periods, outside of same sex marriages. http://libertinethought.blogspot.com/2008/01/20-types-of-marriage.html
Let me extend this argument further- what is this supposed 'pandora's box' that will open up? There tends to be this doomsday scenario espoused by opponents of same sex marriage, and I cant figure out what exactly such a scenario is.
Here's what I have heard ..."it's unnatural," "destroys the concept of traditional marriage," "It denies the natural process of procreation (ironically, people are still having kids without ever getting married)," "it destroys the fabric of society," it's damaging to children," and "it grants special right to a group of people." http://www.tfpstudentaction.org/pol...-marriage-is-harmful-and-must-be-opposed.html http://www.cwfa.org/articledisplay.asp?id=4589 http://www.blameitonthevoices.com/2009/04/10-reasons-why-gay-marriage-is-wrong.html http://www.asmainegoes.com/content/non-religious-arguments-against-gay-marriage http://thinkchristian.net/is-there-a-non-religious-case-against-gay-marriage My entire argument against the (right wing) Christian views of marriage. What is a a marriage? What is a traditional marriage? What is a Christian marriage? What is the difference between such? What is a civil marriage? Polygamy, polygyny, polyamory, or even polyfidelity relationships are just as traditional monogamy (one man and one woman). Some men were so made that they had more than one wife, a boatload of concubines, and a couple of slave girls to play around with. I'm not a historian or historian of marriage in any sense of the argument, but I do realize history and aspect of a marriage is lot more broader than the opponents of gay marriage realize? I do realize that it is very likely for pre-historic people as well as rulers in ancient societies to have non-monogamous relationships.
Totally agree. Sex at Dawn and I Don't: A Contrarian History of Marriage are really interesting reads on that subject.
You could argue that making plural marriage legal would be better for society than gay marriage. Having plural marriage underground has led to all kinds of problems. Might as well do both in one go.
I'm fine with that, but again, it isn't in the same position as homosexual marriage. There are no plural marriage groups that are currently allowed to marry, while other plural marriage groups are prohibited from marrying. That can't be said of consenting adult couples though.
You can word it however you want to make them different. And they are different, but I don't see one morally superior to the other no matter how it is worded. There are groups of people who are allowed to marry (2) while others aren't (3 or more). You are discriminating on numbers instead of sexual orientation. Consenting adults marrying is the moral justification for me.
I actually didnt support gay marriage at first. NOT cuz I had a belief that gays shouldnt have rights, didnt had that belief. It was more "postponed" rights. Its cuz there's already issues about that "family institution". All kinds of single mother fatherless homes leading to all kinds of problems. (NO I'm not saying women's lib was a slight "pandora's box". Cuz that'd mean any kind of civil rights is like that. Saying "Everything got WORSE after __ ") I thought that things were already broken with what we have, so why introduce MORE into that? Would maybe introducing gay marriage have some similar effects we didnt account for? If men and women are already doing things wrong, can be skeptical that gay couples would change much. But we can't predict the future and any "improvement" curves. So rights are rights regardless of social conditions.
Like I said, I'm totally fine with it. It's just as far as one group being denied what another is allowed that is different. I'm not claiming one is morally superior, but one is more discriminated against.
Obviously plural marriage is more discriminated against. Homosexuality is a part of the culture now, in almost every TV show, movie, book, comic book. Plural marriage is still pretty much shunned and taboo.
God made the trees and the animals too. Let's give them the same rights by your logic. That being said, why not just have the government acknowledge no marriages, thus heteros and homos would have the same rights? Simple solution that gives everyone more freedom.
I agree with you that plural marriage is more discriminated against than homosexual marriage, and I do not even think it is close. Children are still being removed from homes where poly families exist. There is a major stigma attached poly families, especially where there is one female and 2-3 husbands. It is often kept very quiet for obvious reasons.
I would assume he means the United States. Outside of the United States I would agree poly relationships in certain cultures are not as taboo as homosexual relationships. Inside the United States, no way, poly relationships (especially 1 woman and multiple men) are very taboo. I represented a poly couple eons ago in a custody fight.
I've never even heard of one woman/many men poly marriages, it's always the other way around. You sure you didn't go dyslexic on us?
Learn something new everyday. Thats one busy woman! Now, that article does make mention of places where that is common, and I didnt see the US listed as a place where it is common, so I can be excused for not realizing it is a common practice in other areas of the world.
