That's just typical China-reporting from American media. Compared with the AP story, NYT conveniently forgot the part most Chinese fans don't care about the baby's citizenship. Instead, they only emphasized a couple of online posts that look extreme or silly. This kind of China reporting happens every day in American media. After all, how can those poor brain-washed Chinese people be portrayed as normal people just like Americans?

I wonder if there is a Chinese BBS somewhere thats laughing at the American "media" taking a post from one of its members seriously and claiming he is the voice of "chinese fans". Thats certainly never happened here before.

Why is this even a story? Who cares where Yao's daugher is born? How does that affect anybody other than Yao's family?

And second to the "Tracie" name. LOL.

If Yao had a boy, people might care more, since you can only play for the country you were born in for the Olympics.

First of all where did you hear it from if you've heard this for years. And which specific tv program are you referring to, I would love to see what they are talking about from their perspective and watch this program you have watched. And also, what specific laws are you referring to? Laws which somehow exclude women from certain rights that men have? In jobs? Income? Dresswear?

China has very traditional values and follows the concept of the tight family unit. Confucian philosophy states that every member of the family has their role and need to be respected because without one role, the unit falls apart. This is the same philosophy that the Japanese have in ie. manufacturing.

There can be an argument made that less emphasis is placed on other people outside of your family and immediate friends, as Chinese people tend to look after the interests of their own family before others. There may be individuals who prefer to pass on their family's name via male heir, but there is no evidence of the "useless"ness of women in Chinese culture that is confusing to me what you are saying. It is the usefulness of Chinese women (and Chinese men) which keep the family unit together, which is why the divorce rate tends to be lower than in other countries due to this fact. This is also why the process of courtship is more extensive and elaborate than other countries as well.

what does this mean? What "democracy" are you talking about? People have different interpretations of democracy and there are different forms of democracy. Are you talking about the theoretical concept of democracy vs communism? Are you talking about certain aspects of democracy you feel is more advantageous to communism? Are you talking about applied and practical democracy vs applied and practical communism? What context of democracy are you talking about? The context of 21st century United States of American democracy? The Ancient Greeks practiced democracy and can be argued to be the purest form as every member of the Senate can express their own opinions through shouting in the same chamber.

And what about communism? Are we talking about Karl Marx? Or Stalin? There are different theoretical and practical forms of communism. The National People's Congress is a body which practically employs different practices of communism than theoretical communism.

    Please elaborate.

If NBA skills are passed down genetically, Shawn Kemp's financial troubles may soon be over. His first few crops will be harvested soon.

Here is the issue I have with this article:
    Title of article
Chinese fans wonder if Yao's baby will be an American

    Body of article
A few say it would be a betrayal of China, not to mention the China team could be denied a future basketball star. But most say they support Yao and don't care which country claims the baby.

So the title should be a summary of what you are writing, which leads the reader at first glance to assume that MOST Chinese facts are concerned about citizenship. However, later we find that A FEW object and MOST will support whatever decision Yao makes.

Not to mention there is no statistical analysis and explanation of where this sample takes place (is it a random sample? is it from one website? is it the first page of a forum on that website?). I could said in this thread that "I BELIEVE YAO MING SHOULD HAVE 10+ KIDS AND HAVE HIS OWN BASKETBALL TEAM" but you cannot write an article stating in the title that "Chinese fans hope Yao has more kids" just because I said it here just now.

This is actually a ubiquitous challenge in most forums these days. How can someone intellectually respond to that statement. I withhold judgement about what you said, but the point is you provide no context of what you are saying, you're not clear about where you are getting that information from, there is no way of evaluating what you are saying based on a premise that you are assuming it to be true. Next time when you make a statement like that please explain the parameters of which you are making these kinds of statements.

da Hellll are you talking about. first of all when is it guaranteed that yao's babies will be superb athletes. they might be really tall, but that says nothing, there are a lot of tall people in China.

plus the daughter of Lang Ping (a really really famous volleyball player) is currently living in the states and is ready to play college volleyball in stanford or something. I dont see the communist government forcing her to train with China

You're absolutely right. The writer wrote this:

"But most say they support Yao and don't care which country claims the baby."

But he starts his piece with a generalization that Chinese fans want to know where Yao's baby will be born (implying they care what the answer is). That's pretty sloppy on his part.

You couldn't be more incorrect or way off here. What you should have said is "This kind of reporting happens every day in the media."

The media as a whole has an agenda or axe to grind just about with every story they spin whether that media outlet be American or Chinese.

From the citizenship of Yao's daughter, to the uproar of an (or a few) internet John Doe, to the women stereotype, to the expected bashing of Tmac by Tinman (how did Tmac come into the picture anyway?), to the bias of the media......

    This thread is really something.
