That is a staffing issue. They always talk about what kind of staff the head coach needs. It is part of the whole expense of hiring a coach. Still has nothing to do with whether video scouting is less useful than scouting in person. If you have a coach who loves video, I could argue that video with supporting stats and shot maps/charts is much better than paper reports.

btw: why are you calling this a "pissing match?"

Scouting is my absolutely favorite thing to do and talk about, and apparently, without asking me ;) the bbs all of a sudden is saying the Rockets don't scout opponents, when their head coach was the franchises best scout ever.

I'm just flabbergasted. Not looking for a pissing match, just an explanation of why anyone interpreted saving money with a video-junky ex-scout coach and his video-junky assistant coach means you don't prepare.

btw: I'm pretty positive we have an advanced scout anyhow. Just can't say for sure until I get home and look at the Rockets Media Guide. Isn't someone called Johnson? our advanced scout?

So the source is Mitch Lawrence of the NY Daily News. Gater thought it was incredible but believed it. I can understand that. But, I won't believe it. Heypartner is right, I think; I've heard too many references to the coach and the players watching tape of opponents to believe that they hadn't. I'd need a quote from the Rockets to change my perception.

    UPDATE:

"I showed him our setup, Westside, the offices, conference room, video room (and) how we do things," Dawson said. "Then we just talked about basketball for a couple hours. I had a great feeling about that. He said a lot of complimentary things that I won't repeat. But I think it went as well as it can go."

Dawson said he invited Van Gundy to return to Westside today to use the video room and tapes he would study as Rockets coach. Van Gundy already had asked questions about the players he could inherit, and he already had a few opinions.

So, according to the interpretation of Mitch Lawrence's interpretation of the Rockets scouting, Dawson has a library of Rockets-game tapes for JVG to use as a coach, maybe to like try to figure out why Moochie dribbles so much. Either that, or it is a video library of opponent games that are getting dusty, because Rudy and Boylen never used them.
